Area Command and MAC Briefing Objectives • Reintroduce the concepts of Area Command and MAC • Understand the responsibilities of the MAC and the scope of actions that may be taken when activated • Become aware of the circumstances for MAC activation, and how you will be notified • Understand how MAC meetings will occur [objectives, agenda]

  3. MAC Command Structure

MAC Responsibilities Provide policy direction to the Area Commander Prioritizing medical resources / requesting federal aid Determining the extent and timing of changes to medical system practices (i.e. standards of care) Determining whether to add new capacity (i.e. Alternate Care Facilities, Medical Needs Shelters, Medical Screening Stations)

  5. MAC Responsibilities Stay informed of health threats, impacts, policy issues and response measures Communicate policy decisions to healthcare system partners and elected leaders Approve a public information strategy for the health and medical response

  6. Activation of the MAC When would this happen? How will I be notified? What am I supposed to do?

Activation of the MAC Circumstances warranting activation: Prioritization of medical resources or requests for federal assistance is necessary (Flu Vaccine 2004) Patient demand may overload healthcare infrastructure for extended periods of time Need for enhanced, long-term coordination of information and decisions among multiple partners (Windstorm 2006)

  8. Activation of the MAC Circumstances warranting activation: Significant loss of healthcare facility capacity (Hospital Evacuation) Significant damage to supporting infrastructure (power, roads, public works, communications) (2001 Nisqually Earthquake)

  11. MAC Meetings Four Objectives: Receive a briefing on health and medical impactsSituational Awareness – know what has happened and what we currently face Become aware of current response activities What are we doing to address the threat - resource status, service capacity

  12. MAC Meetings Four Objectives: Review and revise healthcare system priorities and policy issues Resource allocation; changes to service delivery models; decisions to enhance capacity Review and approve a public information strategy
