High School 101 - Objectives • By the end of the evening, parents should know: • Diploma for Future Ready Core (FRC) completion • Annual promotion requirements • Quality points awarded for difficulty level of class • GPA and class rank • Course offerings • Exam/EOC information • Who to contact • Resources

  4. HS Graduation Requirements • Complete Future Ready Core Requirements • 26 credits required • Pass 5 EOC assessments *Algebra I *Biology *English 1 *Civics & Econ *US History

  5. Specific Graduation Requirements • English I, II, III, IV 4 • Math 4 • Science (Earth, Biology, Physical) 3 • Social Studies (World History, Civics & Economics, US History) 3 • Healthful Living 1 • Electives 11 • TOTAL 26 ******These are minimum graduation requirements.******

  6. ELECTIVES • 11Credits REQUIRED for graduation – should consist of: • 2 Elective credits of any combination from – • Career and Technical Education (CTE) • Arts Education • Second Languages • 4 Elective credits strongly recommended (4 course concentration) from one of the following: • Career & Technical Education (CTE) • Arts Education • Any other subject area (math, science, social studies, English, or cross-disciplinary • 5 additional elective credits

University of North Carolina System Admission (Minimum) Requirements • By satisfying FRC graduation requirements you will meet minimum requirements for UNC System Schools with one exception: you still must take 2 consecutive levels of a Foreign Language. • By the year 2013, the minimum requirements for admission will be a 2.5 GPA and 800 SAT (Critical Reading & Mathematics) or 17 ACT.

  15. Foreign Language • Foreign Language is not recommended for 9th graders unless they have been recommended to begin at Level II. • Levels I and II are taken the same year • Spanish • German

  18. Recommendations and Waivers • Teachers recommend students for courses they feel the student will be most successful. They consider a student’s aptitude as well as work habits. • A waiver must be filled out for each class that differs from the teacher’s recommendation. Waivers can be downloaded from www.apexhigh.com.

  19. PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS To go to 10th grade: • Complete 6 credits • Credits: 1 English • 2 out of 3 in Math Science or S Studies • 3 additional credits To go to 11th grade: • Complete 12 credits • English II, 1 Math, 1 Science, 1 S Studies • 8 additional credits

  20. Attendance • Wake Co policy dictates that a student absent for more than 10 days in a semester class or 20 days in a yearlong class can be assigned a grade of FF indicating failure due to excessive absences. • This includes both excused and unexcused absences. • 2 absences in a block scheduled class is like missing 4 days of learning.

  21. High School Sports! • 85% Attendance required during the semester prior. • Under 19 on or before October 16th • Must have passed 3 courses during the previous semester • Must maintain overall 1.5 GPA • Must not be convicted of a felony • Must live in the school district and enroll no later than the 15th day of the present semester

  22. Learner’s Permit • 14 ½ Years old • 30 hours in the driver’s education classroom • 6 hours actual driving • DMV and DPI require that you pass 3 of 4 classes each semester=Graduated License • Students must pass 70% of courses (3 out of 4 on a block schedule) to be able to obtain or maintain their drivers license!

  28. Total Quality Points / Total Credits Attempted = GPA 71 divided by 24 = 2.958 GPA Can this student go to a 4 year college? Probably, but it depends on a variety of factors. However, choices may be limited.

  32. Top HS Survival Tips • Help your child to be interested and enthusiastic about high school. • When in doubt, ask for help! • Help them to be here. On time. Everyday. • ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO MAKE GOOD CHOICES! • Get involved! • Help them self advocate. • It is never too early to think about college, day 1 of high school counts!
