Facts about Special Olympics Rochester Area (SORA) • Athletes • Over 175 athletes on roster • Live in Olmsted, Dodge, Fillmore, and Goodhue Counties • Ages 8 to 65+ • Some have participated in Special Olympics for over 20 years • No charge to SORA athlete for participation in any Special Olympics sport or competition

  3. Facts about Special Olympics Rochester Area (SORA) Volunteers Backbone of SORA: all coaches and management staff are volunteers Over 30 current active head and assistant coaches 8 volunteers serve on management team ~75% of volunteers do not have an athlete participating in SORA

SORA Offers 8 sports • Spring: Athletics (Track and Field) • 50 athletes per season • Summer: Bocce, Golf, Softball • Bocce: 20; Golf: 30; Softball:12 • Fall: Bowling • 91 athletes • Early Winter: Poly Hockey • 12 athletes • Late Winter: Aquatics, Basketball-Full Court, Half Court & Individual Skills

  5. Athlete Eligibility • Must be 8 years old to compete • Diagnosed with Intellectual or Developmental Disability • Live in Rochester or surrounding communities • Olmsted, Dodge, Fillmore, Goodhue County • Sports can accommodate most all physical disabilities • Requires completion Special Olympics MN medical and consent

Typical Sports Season • Weekly practice for 1-2 hours (8-10 wks) • Coaching ratio of 1 coach to 4-5 athletes • Learn and refine skills for competition, understand sports rules • Competition Opportunities • Participation is optional • Goal is to have all athletes comfortable enough to compete against other SO athletes in SOMN organized competitions • Area Competition (SE MN area) • State Competition (in Twin Cities/Metro)

Rochester Area Community Volunteers as coaches, management Donations of time, money, supplies, facilities Community Support and recognition SOMN Administrative support Financial support (~30% total budget) Polar Plunge, Statewide Fundraisers, Scholarships, LETR Competitions (Area, Regional, State)

Goals for SORA Increase participation of younger athletes Recognition program for athletes/volunteer Fundraising Keep n at no cost to athletes; allow for State/Area competition participation Expansion of sports offerings Increase of team sports & add new sports Increase participation in Athletes as Leaders programs Requires mentors
