  1. Core Assumption… We all want to be a part of a movement…

  2. Core Conviction… The movement we are made to be a part of is God’s gospel movement…

  3. What does a gospel movement look like? Acts 2:40-4740 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold

  4. What does a gospel movement look like? property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

  5. What does a gospel movement look like? Acts 19:17-2017 When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. 18 Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. 19 A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. 20 In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.

  6. What does a gospel movement look like? 1 Thessalonians 1:4-104 For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. 6 You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. 7 And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. 8 The Lord’s message rang out from you not only

  7. What does a gospel movement look like? in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, 9 for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

  8. How does a movement start? “A sixteen-year-old boy is taken captive by raiders and sold into slavery. Desperate with loneliness, hunger and cold, he cries out for deliverance, and God answers. He goes on to pioneer one of the greatest missionary movements the world has ever seen… An obscure Augustinian monk agonizes over what it means to be made right with God through faith. His intense struggle is the catalyst for the Protestant Reformation… A young minister returns from the mission field, a failure in his own eyes and devoid of the experience of God’s loving acceptance. His heart is ‘strangely warmed’ by

  9. How does a movement start? the grace of God, and one of the most significant awakenings in modern history shakes Britain and spreads worldwide… Patrick of Ireland, Martin Luther and John Wesley – we remember them as powerful historical figures through whom God renewed the church and transformed the world. We honor them as heroes of the faith. We forget they began as broken men crying out to God for an encounter that would change their lives. Out of their personal encounters with God, these transformational leaders went on to renew the church and to shape the world in which we live.” -Steve Addison in Movements that Change the World

  10. Gospel movements start with awakened people. Ephesians 2:1-51 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5made us alive with Christeven when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

  11. Some of us have forgotten that we are awake!!! 2 Peter 1:3-93 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to

  12. Some of us have forgotten that we are awake!!! godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.

  13. What is the current state of affairs? “What is often wanted in the local church is unrelieved blandness: a ‘nice pastor’ preaching ‘nice sermons’ about a ‘nice Jesus’ delivered in a ‘nice tone’ of voice . . . What we really want is to be comfortable and undisturbed. ‘Nice’ is just another way of being safe.” -C. John Miller in Outgrowing the Ingrown Church

  14. What is most needed?

  15. How do we wake up? SALVATION SIN

  16. How do we wake up? “First, you must see the absolute holiness of God, the magnitude of your debt, the categorical necessity of God’s just punishment of sin, and therefore the utter hopelessness of your condition. Why? If you don’t see that, then the knowledge of your pardon and deliverance will not be amazing and electrifying. On the other hand, you must see the absolute freeness of your salvation (you are holy in his sight!) and its richness (you are adopted!) and its permanence (there is no condemnation!). Why? Unless you see that, then you will not have the security of soul and conscience to face just how much sin is really in your heart.” (Tim Keller)

Unless you see that, then you will not have the security of soul and conscience to face just how much sin is really in your heart.” (Tim Keller) • Luke 15:2121 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

  24. How do we wake up?

  25. How do we wake up? “Thus the gospel creates in you an increasingly intense humility yet confidence. Without the gospel, humility and confidence only increase at each other’s expense. But in the gospel, humility and confidence increase together.” (Tim Keller)

  26. The Gospel creates true repentance • False repentance = trying to turn away from sin over fear of consequences or fear of rejection (REMORSE) • True repentance= turning away from sin because of sorrow over the sin…because it is a disgusting thing that continues to stab the One who died for me! True repentance is turning toward God!

  27. The Gospel creates true repentance Titus 2:11-1411 For the grace of Godhas appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

  28. How do we fully wake up? GRACE MINISTRY

  29. How do we fully wake up? • 2 Corinthians 5:14  For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. • Colossians 1:6 the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace.

  30. How do we fully wake up?

  31. How do we fully wake up? Ministry is getting Christ & then living compelled to show others how you got Him!

  32. How do we fully wake up? Zeal begets zeal… • Romans 12:11  Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. • 1 Peter 1:22  Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart (NAS)

  33. How does an awakened person turn into a gospel movement? Acts 2:40-4740 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold
