Camden County • Approximate population of 517,000 • Bordered by Delaware River and Philadelphia in Northwest border • Also bordered by Atlantic, to its southeast, Burlington County, to its northeast, and Gloucester, to its southwest • As one moves further down Camden County’s southwest corridor, there is a clear progression from the dense, urban residential and industrial areas to a rural, dispersed residential setting • Although density does directly imply poverty, interesting to note that over 10% of Camden County inhabitants are impoverished, particularly near Camden City

Major, presently offered PRT Systems • PATCO High Speed Line from middle of Camden County (Lindenwold starts) into Philly • River Line – light rail from Camden to Trenton • RiverLink Ferry – across Delaware River connecting Camden and Philadelphia • Atlantic City Line of NJ Transit spanning from Camden to Atlantic County with stops in Cherry Hill, Lindenwold, and Atco

  4. Camden County Data • There are over 300 schools in Camden County and over 4000 industries, offices, and businesses in Camden that attract more than 500,000 Camden travelers daily.

  5. Characteristics of our mock PRT network design • Nearly 900 nodes with approximate 100 interchanges as nodes • While the exact coordinates of rail stations were not directly used, important to note locations were taken into consideration to yield efficiency in design

Success rate of 90.54% of total productions supplied (460793, represented by yellow, reflecting business areas) and 94.73% of total attractions supplied The cost for every station was calculated to be 1.2 million dollars per station. With 900 stations approximately, this would prove to be a very expensive project. Thus, for stations only, expense per person would be 900*1.2 million/517,000 = 2089 dollars. At 2.23 trips per person per day, the cost per trip would be 2089/2.23*30 days per month = $31.22. Total of 1153298 productions and attractions with an estimation of approximately 2.23 trips per person Low estimate bc of Deviation in the number of productions generated because not all businesses were found or able to be geocoded while nearly all of the residential data and density was flawless from US Census bureau Characteristics of Mock PRT network design

Conclusions • Such a mock PRT system appears fiscally impossible to achieve by government due to significant cost of rail and the fact that this system produces results that relatively few trips per person are taken • Due to density of area in Camden across the river from Philly, some sort of mock PRT system in the future appears economically viable; however, in its rural southeast setting, such a PRT system does not appear to be efficiently viable ***System in place with PATCO high speed line and River line combined with NJ Transit and Bus System appears efficient right now since these PRT’s are located in the heart of the more dense areas in Camden

  9. Gloucester County • Total of 337 square miles with population of about 282,000 with population density of 785 per square mile with nearly 60,000 families and about 79,000 households • Mean travel time to work 28 minutes

  10. Gloucester Transportation • Around 93% of people use private transport although over 18% work outside the state and 36% work outside country. Bus routes are a pretty insignificant to travel and there are no transit stops in the county

  11. Mock PRT system • There are 65 schools and over 1700 attractions in Atlantic County. The focus for the PRT Network was spread evenly over productions and attractions. Generally, both housing and attractions were located in small clumps, so that is was much more efficient placing stations where they could be accessed by large numbers of people. Since there are no existing transit stops in place, the PRT network represents a completely new design for Gloucester County.

Mock PRT system • 144 nodes (stations and interchanges) with 4500 productions and 527,088 attractions with success rate of 98.98% for productions and 94.67% for attractions • Approximates to 1.89 trips per person within county on average, on low end bc of deviation in productions • Because the PRT system was so easy to construct with easy success, such a mock PRT system proves to be an economically and efficiently viable

Gloucester Cost of PRT • Cost per station is 1.2 million • Number of stations = 144 • Cost per mile of rail = 5 million dollars • For stations only, expense per person $357.4 • At 1.89 trips per person per day, to pay for all the stations within a month costs $10.81 per trip per person reaffirming the position that such a PRT system in Gloucester appears much more economically viable (in comparison to Camden and Atlantic too)

Atlantic County: Basic Demographics • Area in square miles = 561 land, 110 water • Population = 271,620 people* • Population density = 470 per square mile • Principal Industries: casinos, fine china, aviation testing/engineering, agriculture, glass, plastics, tourism • Number of households = 95,024 • Persons per household = 2.59 • Per capita income = $21,034

Atlantic County: Transportation Statistics CURRENT • Mean travel time to work = 23.7 minutes • Road mileage: 373.23 miles • Major Highways: Garden State Pkway, Atlantic City Expressway, U.S. Routes 9, 30, 40, 206, 322, State Routes 49, 50, 52, 54, 87, 152 • Railroads: Passenger – Amtrak (Atlantic City to Philadelphia), NJ Transit (Atlantic City, Absecon, Egg Harbor City, Hamonton Atco, Lindenwold, Philadelphia; Freight – Southern Railroad Company of NJ • Major Existing Stops: see table on right • Mostly freight, regional (no local) bus routes, cars main mode of transportation (73% commuters)

  16. Mock PRT System: Problems • Attempted to cover 90% of both productions and attractions. Extra 150+ stations for productions – housing spread • Just outside the quarter mile radius • Emphasis on Atlantic City as tourist spot

  17. Mock PRT: Results • 650 nodes (stations and interchanges) • 252,552 productions, 79.93% supplied • 524,791 attractions, 95.49% supplied • 2.86 trips per person

  18. Mock PRT: Implications and Solutions • Cost per station = $1.2m, Number of stations = 600 approximately • Cost per mile of guideway = $5m • For stations only, expense per person = $2650 • At 2.86 trips per person per day, cost per trip = $31 • From 70% to 80% productions, considerable overlap, much more expensive • Stations in reality can be placed further apart – lower population density • Possibility of multi-modal system?
