On your marks…What do they want? • 1 mark – tick it! • 2 marks – identify and back up with evidence • 4 Marks – Describe and explain 2 factors • 6 Marks – Can do 2 factors explain well using facts and figures / 3 factors and explained well • 6/8 Marks – Evaluate both sides of the argument or issue with examples. For example, Hard En unsightly, expensive. Soft en not as effective, cheaper. Should have Overall….at the end. QWC (3 marks)– check spellings, cheap not cheep
How to join the A Team 1. 4 mark question = 2 points & evidence / explanation 2. 6 mark question = 3 points & evidence / explanation 3. 8 mark question = 4 points & evidence / explanation Explain why the future growth rate of the worlds population is hard to predict? (6) 1. Point Future growth rates are hard to predict because new diseases might occur in the future that we have not yet heard of. 1. Explanation / Evidence These could cause death rates to increase because we don’t have the medicines to cure them, for example bird flu. 2. Point Another reason is because resources like food and oil might run out. 2. Explanation / Evidence This could lead to famine and starvation and wars over these resources, which kill lots of people. 3. Point Finally in the future there might be a cures to diseases that currently kill lots of people, such cancer and HIV (aids) 3. Explanation / Evidence This could lead to an increase in life expectancy in some countries and their populations will increase. You should use this to practice all of your 4 / 6 mark questions.
Beware! How to up your game. Last year’s paper did not mention using case studies in 6/8 markers. However, they were expecting top end students to use one. ALWAYS USE A CASE STUDY IN YOU 4/6/8 MARKERS!!!!! Don’t let the examiner have the last laugh. For example, large scale water management such as Three Gorges Dam in China (only takes a mention and you’ve beaten them!) Grade C barrier likely to be increased
