  1. Monday, August 20th CRCT Rocks are classified based MAINLY on their: Color Texture Formation All Above Please take out your Tier Igneous

  2. Week At a Glance Today: Igneous Notes, Explain Tier 2 Igneous Tuesday: Igneous Dichotomous Key Lab and Tier 2 Worktime Wednesday: Igneous/Rock classification quiz and begin Metamorphic notes Thursday: Tier 1 Metamorphic DUE, Computer Lab Friday: Tier 2 Igneous DUE, Computer Lab

  3. Corny Joke of the Day What do planets read Comet Books

  4. What Did You Discover? • Magma vs. lava • Cooling Rate/crystal size • Intrusive vs. Extrusive

  5. Igneous Rocks Coffee Talk

  6. I. Formation They are formed when hot, liquid rock, or magma, cools and solidifies (Hardens)

  7. II. Classification • Igneous rocks are classified according to their composition and texture. • 4 basic types of textures • Glassy – black and sharp • Fine grained – interlocking pieces • Coarse grained – consist of interlocking mineral crystals • Porphyritic – made of large crystals scattered on the back of small crystals.

  8. Igneous Rocks Coarse-Grained Fine-Grained Granite Rhyolite Gabbro Basalt

  9. MUST KNOW INFO III. Magma vs. Lava Magma – molten material below the earth’s surface. Lava– molten material above the earth’s surface.

  10. IV. 2 Types of Igneous Rocks

  11. A. Intrusive Igneous Rocks: • Magma pushes into surrounding rock below the Earth’s surface • Cools slower • Large Crystals • Think: (INSIDE)

  12. Examples: GRANITE GABBRO

  13. Did you know?!?! Granite is the most abundant intrusive rock!

  14. B. Extrusive Rocks: • forms when magma erupts onto the Earth’s surface (lava), • cools quickly • very small or no crystals formed • Think: (EXTERIOR)

  15. Example: BASALT Basalt is the most common EXTRUSIVE igneous rock!

  16. Did you know?!?! Another name for an Extrusive rock is a VOLCANIC rock

  17. Magma Rocks

  18. A Closer Look at an Igneous Rock Obsidian is a dark-colored volcanic glass that forms from the very rapid cooling of molten rock material. It cools so rapidly that crystals do not form. Is it fine-grained or coarse-grained? Is this rock Intrusive or Extrusive?

  19. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqgHUPSTojY Igneous Rock Video Must write down TWO things you learned!!!! Be prepared to share!

  20. Rocks Rock! Tier 2 Igneous Due: Friday, August 24

  21. Tier 2 Activities • Create a song • Make a facebook page *Goal: Demonstrate the knowledge between intrusive vs. extrusive Igneous Rocks

  22. Must Include: • Magma Vs. Lava • Difference between Instrusive and Extrusive (cooling rate, crystal size, location) • How Igneous Rocks are formed • Be typed or written in black ink • 5 or more COLORFUL pictures

  23. Facebook Page Use templates Provided OR Make your own
