Why should our students take the College Placement test? • Mandated by Board of Higher Education • Must demonstrate abilities in basic English and Math • Test places students into appropriate level courses
How can students prepare for the College Placement test? • Review Study Guide available in 61A • Hardcopy sample questions available in reading, sentence skills, arithmetic and algebra • Website available: • (http://www.aims.edu/assessment_site/study_guides.htm) • Tip Sheet on Essay Writing included
How long does it take to complete the College Placement test? • Full test takes approximately 2 – 2.5 hours • Individual tests approximately 1 hour
How does the College Placement test work? • Use of an Adaptive, multiple choice question format: • If a question is answered correctly = a more difficult question follows • If a question is answered incorrectly = a less difficult question follows • At test completion, Accuplacer scores the test and provides a score report
How do we use the test scores to place our students? Score report provides: • individual course placement • advisor reviews scores with students and/or • after meeting with an advisor, students will be able to use the WEB to choose courses and register from home

What if a student does not “pass” the placement test? • There really is no “passing” or “failing” the CPT • Math and English cutscores place students into appropriate courses
What about re-testing? • Students may take the CPT twice without charge • On each successive attempt, after the second, students must pay a nominal $5.00 fee for each retest

Glossary of Terms (continued) • Prerequisite –a course that must be successfully completed before the student may register for another course. The pre-requisite course contains material needed as a foundation for the next course • ESL – English as a Second Language • ABE – Adult Basic Education • EBE – Experience Based Education
Glossary of Terms (continued) • CLEP - The College-Level Examination Program® or CLEP allows students to take a college-level achievement test in lieu of the college course itself. College credit is obtained for each CLEP test taken with a score of 50 or higher. • Challenge – an exam taken by students to earn academic credit for an existing QCC course through testing.
Conditions for Placement at QCC • New students (students who have never attended another college) must take the full CPT • Students who have college credit in mathematics and English do not have to take the test if they have earned a C or better and can provide a transcript • Students taking developmental English courses at QCC must earn a C or better to move on to a higher level English course • Students taking developmental Math courses at QCC must earn a C or better on the departmental final exam or appropriate placement score to move on to a higher level math course

A purpose and focus is established, but only partially developed. An organizational pattern is evident, but is only partially fulfilled. The write competently handles mechanical conventions such as sentence structure, usage, spelling and punctuation, though very minor errors in the use of conventions may be present. Based on this particular score, can the student be placed in a course? Why or why not?
