  1. The Spiritual climb Matthew 20:17-19

  2. Introduction • Where are we? • Why does Jesus tell the disciples a third time that He was going to Jerusalem to die?

  3. Significance of Jerusalem • Melchizedek, the priest, came from Salem (old name of Jerusalem) • Jerusalem was the center of Judaism in Jesus’ time • Prophets went to Jerusalem to die – meant that they went to confront leaders • Prophets were generally executed because the civil and religious leaders did not like the message.

  4. Going up to Jerusalem • Jerusalem is 2500 feet above sea level on Mount Zion • Jericho is 900 feet below sea level • Going up to Jerusalem indicates a geographic move

For Us Today • Jesus climb up to Jerusalem is a spiritual climb – climbing from human to divine form • Are you on a spiritual climb? • A spiritual climb is continually learning and relearning about God • How can you do this, some suggestions? • Read the Bible. If in English, read different versions • Ask questions about the passages you are reading • Always strive to learn more about God and His ways
