2. What is Tuition Exemption? • Waived tuition for up to six credits per quarter for eligible University of Washington employees. • Eligibility Requirements: • Employed half-time • Probation period completed (classified staff only)

3. What exactly does it cover? • 6 Credits of Eligible Classes at UW • Employees are responsible for credits over six • Tuition Exemption does not cover • Classes Numbered 600, 700 and 800 • English 100, 101 and 102 • Math 098 • Experimental College Classes • Self-Sustaining Classes (including MLIS) • Most Distance Classes • Extension Classes • Classes at other Washington state four-year institutions and community colleges

4. Admission Procedures… • Matriculated (degree-seeking) • Applications for new students wanting to enter a degree seeking program are filed with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions or the Office of Graduate Admissions. Due dates vary. • Non-Matriculated • Eligible UW employees who have never attended the UW can apply for admission as non-degree seeking student by completing a Non-matriculated Admission Application for the Tuition Exemption Program. Due 2 weeks prior to the start of the quarter. • Former UW Students • Former UW students who did not graduate and are returning in the same classification may apply through the Registration Office by completing a Returning Student Application.

5. Faculty Staff Tuition Form • Must be filled out every quarter • Due at least two weeks before start of quarter. • For Autumn quarter, forms are due by September 10, 2012. • Helpful Hint: Place reminders on your calendar.

6. Registering for Class • Tuition Exemption registration occurs on the third day of class at midnight. • For Autumn quarter, September 26 at 12:00 am. • Use MyUW to register for classes. • Helpful Hint: • Attend first day of class • Contact professors • Make back up plans

7. Fees • Registration fee: $30 • Technology Fee: $40 for full-time students, pro-rated for part-time

8. Graduate Course Taxes • An employee taking graduate level, non job-related classes is entitled to a tuition waiver of up to $5,250 a year. Amounts in excess of the limit are subject to 32.6% tax. These amounts are withheld from your paycheck(s). Check the dates yearly at:http://f2.washington.edu/fm/sfs/tax/employee • Keep in mind, the more tuition goes up, the sooner you reach the waiver limit. • Tax rates are calculated on the calendar year rather than the school year.

9. Other Important Information • If you register for 6 credits or less, you do not pay the Student Services and Activities fee. Therefore, you will not be entitled to these services at student rates. • https://depts.washington.edu/safcom/ • Most student loans go into deferment if you register for 5 or more credits. • You may have to waive your Tuition Exemption in order to get needed or highly popular classes.
