This article explores the ongoing debate regarding hypnosis and meditation as altered states of consciousness. Supporters of hypnosis believe it results from a narrowed focus of attention and heightened suggestibility, where the subject remains awake and aware. In contrast, skeptics argue that hypnosis functions primarily on the suggestibility of individuals. Meditation is characterized as a state of heightened focus and relaxation, often described as tuning out external stimuli. This exploration delves into differing beliefs and the brainwave patterns involved in both practices.

Hypnosis & Meditation: The “State Debate” Are these really altered states of consciousness?
Hypnosis “State Debate” • Believers think: It is a state of consciousness resulting from narrowed focus of attention • Characterized by heightened suggestibility (can get them to do something) • Subject does not fall asleep • Skeptics think: It is just a trick that works best on those who are highly suggestible • People are just convinced (consciously and unconsciously) that this really works and therefore act on their assumptions • Brainwave patterns remain the same as if you were “conscious”
Meditation • A state of heightened focus and relaxation • Essentially works in reverse of our typical understanding of consciousness- we tune out some (or most) external stimuli
