  1. MOIS466 MINIPROJECT Presented To: Dr. Dina Rateb Presented By: Menna Abd El Fadil Strategic Directions in Human-Computer Interaction

  2. Outline • Introduction • Importance of HCI • History • Prospective Applications • Conclusion

  3. Introduction • Human-computer interaction (HCI) is the study of how people design, implement, and use interactive computer systems and how computers affect individuals, organizations and society.

  4. Introduction • It involves input and output devices and the interaction techniques that use them: 1. How information is presented and requested. 2. How the computer’s actions are controlled and monitored. 3. All forms of help, documentation, and training. 4. The tools used to design, build, test, and evaluate user interfaces. 5. The processes that developers follow when creating interfaces.

  5. Importance of HCI • HCI community can dramatically decrease costs and increase productivity. • For example, one study [Karat 1990] reported savings due to the use of usability engineering [Nielsen 1993] of $41,700 in a small application used by 23,000 marketing personnel. • However, there are also well-known catastrophes that have resulted from not paying enough attention to the human-computer interface. • For example, Aegis tracking system & the Cali crash of December 1995.

  6. Importance of HCI • Aegis tracking system: a contributing cause to the mistaken downing of an Iranian passenger plane.

  7. Importance of HCI • Cali crash of December 1995: Problems with the interfaces of commercial airplane cockpits have been named as a likely cause of several crashes one of which is this.

  8. History

  9. Prospective Applications • Universal Access to Large and Complex Distributed Information. • Education and Lifelong Learning. • Electronic Commerce. • End-User Programming. • Information Visualization.
