  1. Ch. 1 Test Review Biology

  2. Requirements for Life • Know the properties/requirements for life: • Made of cells • Metabolism (sum of all chemical reactions) • Respond to stimuli -*This includes homeostasis where you maintain stable living conditions. • Reproduce *Includes heredity, passing traits on. • Use energy • Produce waste • Grow & Develop

  3. If a puppy grows into an adult dog this is an example of… • A Homeostasis • B Growth & development • C Metabolism • D Made of cells

  4. Metric system • Needed for scientists to speak a common language. • Based on units of 10 • Know your prefixes and units • p. 14

  5. Example… • 1 kilometer = _________m • 1 kilogram = _________ gm 1000 1000

  6. Terms • Chunk the terms to figure out their meaning. • Ex. Biology is… • The study of • Life

  7. Know what these are… • Hypothesis • Observation Use your ___ _______ • How do you test a hypothesis? 5 Senses Perform an experiment!

  8. Lab Safety • Most important rule… Follow the teacher’s directions & remain calm.

  9. Ethics in Science Ethical behavior is needed in science because… • All scientists rely on the work of other scientists. Scientists must report correct information. • People depend on disease breakthroughs to manage their health. Scientists may use people in their tests/trials. • People used in experiments might be exploited or exposed to known dangers if the scientists do not behave ethically.

  10. Lab Techniques p. 15 • We use microscopes to study microscopic organisms “little critters”. • Because these organisms include bacteria it is much more important to use sterile techniques. • Sterile techniques, are methods that keep unwanted organisms out of a lab to reduce risk of contamination.
