  2. Objective: We will trace and analyze the author’s use of time and sequence • What is our objective for the story we will be reading? • What does it mean to analyze something?

Concept Development • Sequence: The order in which the story’s events take place • Chronological order: the most common order for stories, time order (1,2, 3) • Flashback: a scene that interrupts the story to introduce an event that took place in the past • Flash-forward: A scene that jumps ahead of the story to narrate an event that happens in the future • Foreshadowing: Hints in the story that certain events are going to happen later

  5. Concept Development • Checking for understanding • What is the most common sequence used in stories? • What is the difference between flash-forward and foreshadowing?

  6. Importance • Understanding time and sequence is important because… • It will help you comprehend the plot of the story/movie and not become confused • Why else?

  7. Importance for authors/directors • Why would authors or directors choose to manipulate a time sequence with elements like flashback, flash-forward or foreshadowing? • Possibly to create suspense, generate interest, create ambiguity, produce humor…

  8. Closure • Why is it important to understand time and sequence of story? • What is chronological order? • Name 3 ways an author/director can interrupt or manipulate the time and sequence of a story.

  9. Independent Practice Application • Identify a time-manipulation element in a story or movie you are familiar with. • THEN, explain HOW the time manipulation affected the story and/or audience. **You cannot use Inception, The Matrix or The Notebook
