  4. Ruled the state of Qin Conquered warring states and centralized power. Replaced feudalism by instituting 36 military districts. Forced nobles to live in his capital so that he could monitor them. Gave the land back to the peasants but expected them to pay high taxes. The rise of shihuangdi

  6. Qin Dynasty • Although, he was a harsh ruler. He brought order and stability to China and further unified China. • Although Shi Huangdi was not a popular ruler, he worked to unify China in the following ways: • Single system of writing • Single system of currency • Building roads • The Great Wall of China (People were forced to work on this project)

  10. Government of the Han Dynasty • They made Confucianism the official belief of the state. • They relied on well-educated scholars to run the government. • They used a civil service exam to find the most qualified officials.

  11. Economy of the Han Dynasty • They reorganized finances. • They imposed a government monopoly on iron and salt. This helped lower taxes on the peasants. • They opened up the Silk Road, a trade route linking China and the West.

  12. Achievements of the Han Dynasty • Acupuncture • Paper – made from wood pulp • Seismograph to measure earthquakes • Wheel barrow • Improved the calendar

  13. Infrastructure fell into disrepair. Weak emperors could not control warlords, or local military leaders, who eventually overthrew the last Han emperor. Collapse of the han empire
