  2. Old Testament Background • Egypt, Moses, plagues, lambs blood, unleavened bread. (Exodus) • Sinai covenant: 3 feasts for Israel • The actual Passover week begins with the Day of Unleavened bread • Bread that would last, was compact to carry. Signifies sin.

  3. 1 Corinthians 5:7-8 “Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”

  4. 1 Cor. 11: 28 -30 “Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.” Therefore the symbolism of “Unleavened” signifies repentance having been made.

  5. On the Day of Passover, the priest would blow the shofar and sacrifice the lamb on behalf of the whole community, for the forgiveness of their sins, at 3pm (the 9th hour) in the afternoon. Jesus died on the cross at that time. • The lamb was to be male, without spot or blemish. (Jesus was sinless) 1Peter 1:18-19) "...a lamb without blemish or defect." • The sacrificed lamb was to be eaten, but none of its bones broken. ((Ex 12:46) • John 19:32-33 "...to fulfil the prophecy that not a bone of him shall be broken". (Psalm 34:20)

  6. What would Jesus have eaten at the last supper? Luke 22:7 “Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

The cups and the Matzas • In the Jewish Passover meal (Seder), there are 3 pieces of unleavened bread called"matzahs". • The second one is broken, wrapped in a white cloth and hidden. • It is later "resurrected" - is found and eaten. • The pattern on the matzah, cooked over a griddle is striped and pieced. "By his stripes we are healed", "He was pierced for our transgressions”

  8. The Jewish seder also involved 4 fills of wine in your glass. The 3rd one, immediately after the meal is called "The cup of redemption”

Ancient roots • 3500 yrs ago, God chose a people for himself to love forever and that they in turn would reflect his character and nature and glory to all the peoples of the earth.“Blessed to be a blessing” Gen.12:2In Christ we are incorporated into the people of God, by faith.And we celebrate the memorial of our redemption by participating in Holy Communion; the New Covenant Passover meal.
