  1. THE AMAZING WATER MOLECULE THERE IS NOTHING LIKE IT ON EARTH

  2. H20 • The water molecule is made of 2 atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen. This atoms are held together by two covalent bonds. • Each atom now has its valence, or outer orbital filled.

  3. Water Molecules are Polar

  4. Water Molecules Like to Stick Together

  5. The water molecule is a polar molecule. • It has a partial positive and a partial negative side. • At any one time more electrons will be closer to the oxygen nucleus than to the hydrogen nucleus. • Oxygen has a greater pull than does hydrogen because it has 8 protons.

  6. Hydrogen Bonding • Is a weak attraction between water molecules. • Cohesion – water wants to stick to itself. • Adhesion – water wants to stick to surfaces that are hydrophilic. • Surface Tension – water forms a layer at its surface between air and water.

  7. Hydrogen Bonding is not a real bond but a weak attraction.

  8. Ice Floats • Water boils at 100 C and water molecules are very far apart. • Water freezes at 0 C and water molecules are closer together. • Water is its most dense at 4C and so more molecules can be present in a given volume than at any other temp. • As molecular motion slows, the molecules become locked in a crystal structure known as ice. • This distance is greater than than at 4 C.

  9. Water can be in 3 states at the Same Time in the Same Place!

  10. Universal Solvent

  11. Other Unique Properties of Water • High Specific Heat Takes a lot of energy to raise the temp.of water. The wetter the climate, the more moderate the climate. • High Heat of Vaporization Water has a cooling effect.

  12. Thursday, May 8 • Draw the water molecule and label the atoms, protons, & electrons. • What type of bond exists between the atoms in the water molecule? • What type of bond exists between 2 water molecules?
