Industry Challenges • Uncertainty in the market - more or less work – when – where • 40% of workforce in our industry will retire in the next 5 years (ageing workforce) • First of baby boomers are 62 this year • Average age for retirement is 59 in our industry • 25% of skill sets will be lost through retirement • It will take until 2023 for our industry to recover to its current skill level
Insights from Hopkins (et al) paper • It is a fallacy that worker behaviour is the cause of most incidents • Integrity of design (conditions) and management practices have the greater impact. Such as what it is that managers attend to and the examples they set are crucial determinants of organisational outcomes of all sorts, including Safety performance outcomes. • How people areorganised, managed, motivated, rewarded and their physical environment, tools and equipment are root causes.
Everyone and that includes you and me, is at times careless, complacent, over-confident and stubborn. At times each of us becomes distracted, inattentive, bored and fatigued. We occasionally take chances, misunderstand, misinterpret and we misread. They are completely human factors. Because we are human and because all these traits are fundamental and built into each of us, the equipment, machines and systems that we construct for our use have to be made to accommodate us the way we are, and not vice versa. All these require judgement and discussion of various kinds, and still do not capture all leadership and management issues impacting Safety such as integrity of design, level of trust, perception of management commitment, level of consultation and whether there is a mature Safety system functioning well in practice.
