Proclamation Line (1763) • What does it mean to Proclaim? • If we have a “line” what are we doing in this law? • The colonists could not settle west • Why is this bad for the colonists? • Need land to farm and vote
Stamp Act (1765) Give an example • Had to pay a tax on newspapers, legal documents, deck of cards, dice, and pamphlets Why would this hurt the colonists?
Quartering Act (1765) • British soldiers were allowed to stay in the colonists homes EEK! How would your family feel?
Declaratory Act (1766) Parliament • Parliament can pass laws for the colonies “in all cases whatsoever” Why does this act make them angry? Do the colonists have representation in Parliament?
Tea Act (1773) • Tax on Tea • Could only buy tea • from Britain • Can’t trade with • other countries How does this hurt the colonists & business owners?
Boston Tea Party (1773) • The colonists were angry over the Tea Act • One night they dressed as Native Americans and threw the tea into the Boston Harbor How does this hurt the tea companies?
The Intolerable Acts • British closed Boston Harbor • Why is this bad? • Stops trade • Hurts the colonists economically
Boston Massacre (1770) • British troops opened fire on a crowd of colonists and killed five • There was a disagreement over why they fired Crispus Attucks was the first to be killed
The Shot Heard Around the World(1775) • Battle of Lexington & Concord, Massachusetts • There was a stand-off between colonists and the British troops • No one knows who really fired first • Starts the American Revolution What is a stand-off?
