  2. Quartering Act: Passed 1765 Description: The Quartering Act required colonists to let soldiers stay at their house. They have to provide supplies like shelter and food. Reason for act: It would help reduce British expenses. Colonists response: They were very angry and did not like having soldiers in their home. Some people in New York refused to let soldiers stay in their house.

  3. The Sugar Act: Passed in 1764 Description: Taxes were placed on sugar, molasses, and other goods that were shipped into the colonies. Reason For Act: To have punishments for smugglers and demanded strict rules. Colonists Response: They were upset because smuggling was illegal and merchants were buying many smuggled goods without knowing.

  4. The Stamp Act: Passed in 1765 Description: All legal and commercial documents were required to have a stamp on them. To get the stamp you had to pay taxes. Reasons For Stamp Act: So that people had to pay the taxes that were on the goods because the British wanted money from the taxes. Colonists Response: They were furious because this was the first tax that affected them directly so they decided to boycott British products.

  5. Townshend Act: Passed in 1767 Description:It suspended the New York assembly until the New York colonists would house the British soldiers. They also placed imported taxes on goods brought into colonies. Reason: It raised the prices of products. Colonists response: Made colonists in Boston boycott British goods and boycott spreads throughout the colonies. This started the Boston Massacre.

Many did not like the tea the East India Company were selling. Reason: to stop the colonists from buying smuggled tea and buy regular tea that had tax on it. Colonists response: They were furious. In Charleston South Carolina, colonists unloaded tea onto docks and left it there to rot. In New York and Philadelphia colonists blocked ships from entering the port. In Boston, colonists disguised themselves as Native Americans, boarded three ships, and dumped hundreds of chests of tea into the harbor.

  7. Intolerable or Coercive Acts: Passed in 1774 Description: Series of laws created to punish Massachusetts for the Boston Tea Party. Reason: Punish Massachusetts for the tea party and to ban committees of correspondents. Colonists Response: They ban all trade with Britain unless they lifted the intolerable acts.
