  4. Part of the Four Functions of Management • Planning - to set the direction • Organizing - to create structures • Controlling - to ensure results • Leading- to inspire effort • Communicate the Vision • Build enthusiasm • Activate commitment, hard work

  5. Vision • A future that one hopes to create or achieve in order to improve upon the present state of affairs Ron Joyce – Children’s Foundation Craig Kielburger- Free the Children

  6. Visionary Leadership • A leader who brings to the situation a clear and compelling sense of the future as well as an understanding of the actions need to get there successfully. • Must be able to communicate the vision in a way that others are willing to work hard to achieve it.

  7. 5 Principles for meeting the challenge of Visionary Leadership • Challenge the process - Be a pioneer; encourage innovation and support people who have ideas • Show enthusiasm - Inspire others through personal enthusiasm to share in a common vision • Help others act - Be a team player and support the efforts and talents of others • Set the example - Provide a consistent model of how others can and should act • Celebrate achievements - Bring emotion into the workplace and rally "hearts" as well as "minds"

  8. Power and Influence • Should be used for the good/betterment of the group • Power: The ability to get someone else to do something you want done or to make things happen the way you want • Two Types • Position Power • Personal Power

Sources of Position Power • Reward Power - the capacity to offer something of value as a means of influencing other people • Coercive Power - the capacity to punish or withhold positive outcomes as a means of influencing other people • Legitimate Power - the capacity to influences other people by virtue of formal authority, or the rights of office

  10. Sources of Personal Power • Expert Power - the capacity to influence other people because of specialized knowledge • Referent Power - the capacity to influence other people because of their desire to identify personally with you

  11. To succeed at leadership, managers must both acquire all types of power and use them appropriately

  12. 4 Points to building power • There is no substitute for expertise • Likable personal qualities are very important • Effort and hard work breed respect • Personal behaviour must match expressed values

  13. Characteristics of effective leaders • Drive • Self-confidence • Creativity • Cognitive ability • Business knowledge • Motivation • Flexibility • Honesty and integrity

  14. Leadership Styles • Autocratic style • Laissaz-faire style • Democratic style

  15. Autocratic style • Emphasizes task over people • Keeps authority and information to themselves • Acts in unilateral command-and-control fashion

  16. Laissaz-faire style • Showing little concern for task • Letting the group make decisions • Displays a "do the best you can and don't bother me" attitude

  17. Democratic style • Commitment to task and people • Getting things done while sharing information • Encouraging participation in decision making • Helps others develop their skills and capability

  18. Scenarios • Form groups of 3 • You will be given a scenario • As a group act out the way that is stated on the paper • Then act out what the group feels is the best management style would be for that scenario
