  2. Agenda • Pre-unit questions (questions to get you thinking about the topic and to facilitate further thought and reflection) • Exploring Mastery Learning • Application & self-assessment questions • Beginning to integrate Mastery Learning into your course

  3. Pre-unit questions • Think of a time when you needed more than one try at learning something • Does completing one paper make you a writer or does completing internship make you a professional? • How does time and practice “fit” with teaching and learning?

  4. Mastery Learning • At the heart of Mastery Learning (ML) is the idea that aptitude equals time needed to learn a task (Gentile, 1997) • Passing a driving test is a good example of ML. Passing a driving test is not a one time experience. If you fail you can retake the test. Your ability to pass is in part based the time it takes to master vehicle operation. • From an educational perspective students receive additional feedback and instruction and multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning/mastery.

  5. Mastery Learning • After discussing the pre-quiz questions and reflecting on the past slide read the narrative on ML. • If ML is new to you what do you see as strengths and challenges to the approach? • How are you already performing ML in your teaching?

  6. Mastery Learning: Points to Consider • Anderson (as cited in Gentile, 1997) stated the following features are included in ML • “Clearly specified objectives • Assessment procedures which are short yet valid for those objectives • Pre-established standards for mastery • Properly sequenced curriculum units comprised of the necessary facts, principles, & skills • Feedback provided to the students concerning their learning • Additional time & assistance for students who fail to meet the minimum passing standard, to correct misunderstandings” (pg 445)

  7. Application of Mastery Learning • Think of a class you enjoy teaching and one aspect of that course you can apply ML. • Start to develop a plan based on the six criteria for ML.

  8. Application of Mastery Learning:Long Range • Using the action research approach of look, think, act study how well you and your students did with ML?
