  1. Bibb County Public Schools 2009 Promotion Criteria Effective for Elementary and Middle School Students for the 2008-2009 School Year

  2. Bibb County Vision Achievement and Performance for EVERY child, in EVERY classroom, in EVERY school.

  3. Summer Opportunity Program • There will be no Summer Opportunity Program for Students in Grades 1-8 • To better meet the needs of all students, every school will have a specific plan for intervention for all students the last 4 weeks of school

  4. Advantages • The needs of each student is being met whether the student needs remediation and/or acceleration • Remediation will focus on the specific areas that a student needs to be successful at the next grade level • Acceleration will focus on the key terms and concepts that students will be taught at the next grade level

  5. Advantages • Students are served in their home schools in familiar surroundings • Students will receive more targeted, focused, and individualized instruction with familiar staff

  6. CRCT Re-Test • Students in Grades 3, 5, & 8 that need to take the CRCT Re-Test in Reading and/or Math will test in their home schools on May 19-20, 2009 • The CRCT Re-Test in Reading will be Tuesday, May 19, 2009 • The CRCT Re-Test in Math will be Wednesday, May 20, 2009

  7. CRCT Re-Test • The CRCT Re-Test scores will be back earlier so that students will know if they are promoted or retained

  8. Promotion Criteria for Grades 1, 2, & 4 • Meet local Bibb County criteria for promotion into the next grade: • Earn a passing grade (70 or above) in Reading and Math • Not exceed ten (10) unexcused absences in a school year

  9. For Promotion: Passes reading Passes math Meets attendance criteria For Retention: Fails either math orreading OR Exceeds ten (10) unexcused absences Promotion Scenarios for Grades 1, 2, & 4

Promotion Criteria for 3rd Graders to Enter 4th Grade • Meet local, Bibb County criteria for promotion into the 4th grade: • Earn a passing grade (70 or above) in both Reading and Math • Not exceed ten (10) unexcused absences in a school year • Must earn a score of 800 or above on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) Reading Test

  11. For Promotion: Passes reading Passes math Earns 800 or higher on CRCT reading subtest Meets attendance criteria For Retention Fails either math or reading OR Earns a score of less than 800 on the CRCT reading subtest OR Exceeds ten (10) unexcused absences 3rd Grade Scenarios:

Promotion Criteria for 5th Graders to Enter 6th Grade • Meet local, Bibb County criteria for promotion into the 6th grade: • Earn a passing grade (70 or above) in both Reading and Math • Not exceed ten (10) unexcused absences in a school year • Must earn a score of 800 or above on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) Reading and Math tests

  13. 5th Grade Scenarios: • For Promotion: • Passes reading • Passes math • Earns 800 or higher on CRCT reading & math subtests • Meets attendance criteria • For Retention • Fails either math or reading OR • Earns a score of less than 800 on the CRCT reading or less than 800 on the math subtest OR • Exceeds ten (10) unexcused absences

  14. Promotion Criteria for Grades 6 & 7 • Meet local Bibb County criteria for promotion into the next grade: • Earn a passing grade (70 or above) in Language Arts and Math • Not fail 3 other academic courses • Not exceed ten (10) unexcused absences in a school year

  15. For Promotion: Passes language arts Passes math Does not fail three other courses Meets attendance criteria For Retention Fails either math or language arts OR Fails three or more subjects OR Exceeds ten (10) unexcused absences Promotion Scenarios for Grades 6 & 7

Promotion Criteria for 8th Graders to Enter 9th Grade • Meet local, Bibb County criteria for promotion into the 9th grade: • Earn a passing grade (70 or above) in both Language Arts and Math • Not fail three other academic courses • Not exceed ten (10) unexcused absences in a school year • Must earn a score of 800 or above on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) Reading and Math Tests

  17. 8th Grade Scenarios: • For Retention: • Fails either math or reading OR • Fails three or more subjects OR • Earns a score of less than 800 on the CRCT reading orless than 800 on the math subtest OR • Exceeds ten (10) unexcused absences • For Promotion: • Passes language arts • Passes math • Earns 800 or higher on CRCT reading & an 800 or higher on the math subtests • Does not fail three other courses • Meets attendance criteria

  18. What If’s? What if my child fails reading (language arts for grades 6-8) and/or math, but passes the CRCT? • Bibb County will no longer offer the Summer Opportunity Program for students in Grades 1-8 that fail academic classes • After the CRCT testing, all students will receive remediation and/or acceleration the last 4 weeks of school

  19. What If’s? What if my child fails reading (language arts for grades 6-8) and/or math, but passes the CRCT? • At the end of the 4 weeks of intervention, the administrators and teachers will review multiple sources of information to determine promotion or retention

  20. What Ifs? What if my child earns a CRCT reading score of 799 or less (and/or CRCT math score of 799 or less for 5th & 8th graders)? • After CRCT testing, students will receive 4 weeks of remediation in their area(s) of need • The CRCT Re-Test will be administered to students in Grades 3, 5, & 8 May 19-20, 2009 • In late June, retest results will be mailed to parents - a student who meets the minimum criteria will then be promoted

  21. What Ifs? What if my child still does not meet the minimum criteria on the CRCT? • Your child will be considered retained in Grade 3, 5, or 8 for the 2009-10 school year • There is an appeal process which can be initiated to review the results of testing and third/fifth/eighth grade performance • Placement in the next grade requires a unanimous vote of a committee of which you are a part

  22. CRCT Administration • Dates: April 14-21, 2009 • Attendance: Mandatory for all students in Grades 1-8 • Passing reading (3rd), or reading & math (5th & 8th) scores must be earned. No passing scores = retention; therefore, a student must take the CRCT • Make-up testing days will be available for illnesses

  23. Get a good night’s sleep Eat a healthy breakfast Be familiar with content Benchmark Testing Classroom Review Read questions carefully Answer those questions you know first to build confidence Don’t get stuck on an item Test-Taking Strategies

  24. What Can You Do Now? • Keep in close contact with your child’s teacher if your child is making low marks in reading and/or math • Monitor your child’s grades on ParentConnect • Spend a few minutes reading for pleasure each day, and take turns reading • Ask your child questions about what was read: specific facts, comprehension, and predictions

  25. What Else Can I Do? • Review math facts and provide practical examples and problems • Ensure that homework is done nightly to reinforce concepts being taught in the classroom • Ask for additional work to bolster areas of weakness • Help your child be prepared to learn every day!
