  2. Intro GRADE- 5 • The state capitol is a great place to take students because it can show them the bigger picture of government participation. It is also quite a fancy building that everyone should see…

  3. Children’s Book

  4. Why the State Capitol? • I decided to take the students here because they have been learning about how American citizens participate in their government. By observing the House of Representatives discussing a bill, the students will be able to compare and contrast their experiences in the classroom with one at the state level.

  5. Before the Capitol 5.27 Explain how American citizens were expected to participate in, monitor, and bring about changes in their government over time, and give examples of how they continue to do so today. • Before this field trip, the class will have participated in their own town hall election. They also will have learned about various ways that citizens participate in government.

  6. 4552- How it applies How does it deal with 4552? Senate Chambers • This field trip has to do with 4552 because it is really looking at social studies beyond the government and history aspect. By getting a chance to observe the H.O.R. in action, the students will also be witnessing social interaction amongst many people with different opinions, which is an integral part of social studies.

  7. Making it a lesson • While the students are visiting the Capitol, they will be required to make a lot of observations and take many notes on what they see and hear. Throughout the tour, I will talk to them about what they are finding interesting, what they already knew, how it is similar/different to the classroom, etc.
