  2. Evolution of User Interfaces • Command-Line Interface (CLI) : It is a mechanism for interacting with a computer operating system or software by typing commands to perform specific tasks. • Graphical User Interface (GUI) : A type of user interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices with images rather than text commands. • Natural User Interface (NUI) : Natural - Intuitive – the power of knowing without learning or reasoning, unthinking, prompted by instinct – a natural tendency or ability.user interface - the points at which a user interacts with a system CLI GUI NUI

  3. What is Microsoft Surface? • Microsoft Surface (project-code name Milan) is a Surface Computing platform and a forthcoming multi-touch product from Microsoft which is developed as a software and hardware combination technology that allows a user, or multiple users, to manipulate digital content by the use of gesture recognition. • Microsoft Surface represents a fundamental change in the way we interact with digital content. With Surface, we can actually grab data with our hands, and move information between objects with natural gestures and touch. This could involve the motion of hands or physical objects. This paradigm of interaction with computers is known as a Natural User Interface (NUI). Surface features a 30-inch tabletop display whose unique abilities allow for several people to work independently or simultaneously, all without using a mouse or a keyboard.

  4. T1 Prototype History of Microsoft Surface • 2001 : Stevie Bathiche of Microsoft Hardware and Andy Wilson of Microsoft Research developed an idea for an interactive table that could understand the manipulation of physical pieces and a team was formed for the development of the idea. • 2003 : The team presented the idea to Bill Gates, Microsoft chairman. The first prototype was born and nicknamed “T1”. The evolution of Surface had begun. A variety of early applications were also built, including pinball, a photo browser and a video puzzle. As more applications were developed, the team saw the value of the surface computer beyond simply gaming and began to favor those applications that took advantage of the unique ability of Surface to recognize physical objects placed on the table. The team was also beginning to realize that surface computing could be applied to a number of different embodiments and form factors.

  5. “Tub” Model Prototype Microsoft Surface Today History of Microsoft Surface • 2004 : A number of different experimental prototypes were built including “the tub” model, which was encased in a rounded plastic shell, a desk-height model with a square top and cloth-covered sides. • 2005 : The final hardware design seen today was finalized. • May 29, 2007 : The Microsoft Surface was announced in front of the world at D5 conference. • April 17, 2008 : The preliminary launch – the Microsoft Surface became available for customer in AT&T stores.

  6. What is Surface Computing? • Surface computing breaks down traditional barriers between people and technology, changing the way people interact with all kinds of everyday content, from photos to maps to menus. • The intuitive user interface works without a traditional mouse or keyboard, allowing people to interact with content and information by using their hands and natural movements. • Surface computing is an interactive out-of-home solution, meaning users don’t have to own the device to have an experience with it. Anyone can interact with it, wherever it is. • Microsoft Surface is the best known surface computing platform.

  7. Features of Microsoft Surface • Direct Interaction : Users can actually “grab” digital information with their hands—interacting with content by touch and gesture, without the use of traditional devices such as a mouse and keyboard.

  8. Features of Microsoft Surface • Multi-Touch Contact : Surface computing recognizes many points of contact simultaneously, not just from one finger such as a typical touch screen, but up to dozens of items at once. Microsoft Surface has been optimized to respond to 52 touches at a time.

  9. Features of Microsoft Surface • Multi-User : Typical computers accept only one keyboard and a mouse. Microsoft Surface accepts multiple inputs from multiple users. More than one person sitting across the Surface, can do independent work on the same Surface. • The horizontal form factor makes it easy for several people to gather around surface computers together, providing a collaborative, face-to-face computing experience.

  10. Features of Microsoft Surface • Object Recognition : Users can place physical objects on the surface to trigger different types of digital responses, including the transfer of digital content. • Microsoft Surface applications can recognize special tags called “Identity Tags” besides fingers and  objects. These tags are similar to bar codes in concept and can store a particular value which can be retrieved by Surface’s vision system. 11. Structure of Microsoft Surface • Screen –It is a 30-inch reflective surface with a diffuser which turns the Surface’s acrylic tabletop into a large horizontal “multitouch” screen, which is capable of processing multiple inputs from multiple users. The Surface can recognize objects by their shapes or by reading coded Identity tags when placed on the table. • Infrared –Surface’s “machine vision” operates in the near-infrared spectrum, using an 850-nanometer-wavelength LED light source aimed at the screen. When objects touch the tabletop, the light reflects back and is picked up by multiple infrared cameras with a net resolution of 1280 x 960.

  12. CPU – Surface uses many of the same components found in everyday desktop computers — - a Core 2 Duo processor - 2 GB of RAM - 256 MB graphics card - Wireless communication with devices on the surface is handled using WiFi and Bluetooth antennas (future versions may incorporate RFID or Near Field Communications) - Operating system is a modified version of Microsoft Vista. 4.Projector – Microsoft’s Surface uses the same DLP light engine found in many rear-projection HDTV’s. The footprint of the visible light screen, at 1024 x 768 pixels, is actually smaller than the invisible overlapping infrared projection to allow for better recognition at the edges of the screen.

  13. Working of Microsoft Surface • Microsoft Surface has a 360-degree user interface and a 30-inch reflective surface. • It has a XGA DLP projector underneath the surface which projects an image onto its underside. • The five cameras in the machine record reflections of infrared light from objects and human fingertips on the surface. • This user input is then processed and displayed using rear projection. • Microsoft Surface uses the rear projection system which displays an image onto the underside of thin diffuser. • Image processing system processes the camera images to detect fingers, custom tags and other objects such as paint brushes when touching the display. • The objects recognized with this system are reported to applications running in the computer so that they can react to object shapes, identity tags, movement and touch. • The applications of the Surface are written in Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF).

  17. Advantages of Microsoft Surface • Large surface area to perform different tasks simultaneously. • Data manipulation – selecting, moving, rotating and resizing is easy (manipulating data on the surface is similar to manipulating them in the real world). • User-friendly – Quick and easy to learn and use. • Multi-user – several people can gather around the Surface and perform similar or independent tasks simultaneously. • Multi-touch contact – Microsoft Surface recognizes many points of contact simultaneously. Microsoft Surface can recognize 52 simultaneous touches at a time. • The interaction of the Surface with the real world objects becomes faster and easier due to it’s Object Recognition property. • Tasks can be performed faster due to elimination of many processes and so time is saved.

  18. Disadvantages of Microsoft Surface • Very expensive (US $5000 to $10000) • Non portable • Privacy – open for many to view • Screen visibility – the screen of the Surface can become rough due to fingers, dirt and other objects. So the screen visibility can become dull. • Objects need to tagged by identity domino tags or Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags.

  19. Surface 2.0 – The Present of Microsoft Surface PixelSense– • PixelSense is new technology where there's infrared sensors all across this screen. Every single pixel is actually acting as a camera. The PC, the Surface here, can actually see. • PixelSense gives an LCD display the power to recognize fingers, hands and objects placed on the screen, including more than 50 simultaneous touch points. With PixelSense, pixels in the display see what's touching the screen and that information is immediately processed and interpreted. On January 6,2011, the Microsoft and Samsung Electronics at International Consumers Electronics Show (CES) 2011 in Las Vegas, unveiled the next generation of the Microsoft Surface experience – Surface 2.0, featuring PixelSense technology, which gives LCD panels the power to see without the use of cameras.
