  1. Engineering Squads A GK-12 activity Greg Galloway

  2. Module Goals • Introduce electrical and computer engineering • Demonstrate the accessibility of engineering • An arcane art? • Anyone can be an engineer if they try • Demonstrate the engineering process • Problem solving techniques common to all sciences

  3. The Scheme of Things OVERALL MODULE THIS ACTIVITY

  4. Logistics • Divide class into groups of two • Groups assign a scribe and a calculator • Method of job selection • Groups consider multiple jobs at a time • Two or three is sufficient • Many jobs available • Jobs have varying difficulty • Decision process involved

  5. List of Available Jobs

  6. Example Job

  7. Solution Sheet Ohm’s Law V=IR And Power P=VI Given to students 7 P=45w V=120v R=? 45=1202/ x x=1202/ 45 R=320Ω P=VI I=V/R P=V2/R R=320Ω

  8. Grading

  9. Grading a Solution Missing an Equation Missing Units 7 P=45w V=120v R=? 45=1202/ x x=1202/ 45 R=320Ω P=VI 10% 10% 10% 30% R=320 20%+0% Total: 80% Earned: 900$*.8 = 720$

  10. Grading Modifications • Groups can pay for perks • Check a solution • Peace of mind • Balance • Spy • Compare answers • Instructor does the spying • Hint • Knowns/Unknowns

  11. Other Possibilities • Job List and Worksheets have multiple uses • Extra credit requests • Pop quizzes • Reinforce skills • Bonus activity • This activity is a template • Also works for hands-on • Design process, analysis, etc…
