What’s Good • UCLA is highly prestigious; one of the very best dental schools in California, the country and world • Quality of education is extremely high; • decorated faculty and instructors • many students go on to specialize in-house or elsewhere • UCLA has programs for endodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, etc. • Opportunities in world-renowned dental research programs • Relatively cheaper: about $41K tuition/year, $78K total/year • Instruments, books, supplies, etc.: about $10.2K/year • Living expenses: about $23.3K/year • 95% are eligible for financial aid (average $57K first year) • Located in Westwood, CA; coastal SoCal weather, close to the city, lots to do, etc. • The immediate recognition that comes with the UCLA name

What’s Not so Good… • Extremely difficult to get in; stellar GPA and DAT score are almost required • In the absence of perfect scores, a competitive application requires something that sets the applicant apart—honor society, department awards, research awards, cured a form of cancer, etc. • Post-graduation competition with USC in the LA area (saturated with dentists as it is) • Somewhat small patient pool • Located in Westwood, CA; expensive place to live, traffic is a pain, parking costs an arm and a leg, etc.

  32. Notes for Applying • Rolling admissions – apply early! • Public school with public school acceptance habits; (ie, those from an underserved community or experience in an underserved community could be slightly favored)

Cons: -Arizona is very hot in the summer! -Not known for research. -Term type: Semester • 1st and 2nd Year: Study the basic sciences and the clincal introductions in a classroom setting. • 3rd year: Complete dental simulation exercises and work side by side with trained dentists in the campus clinic. • 4th year: rotations at community-based clinics • Community service is key to getting in!
