  12. SI Units • SI = International System of Units • Length, mass, time are fundamental physical quantities and are SI base units • Mechanics (motion and force) only use these • Length = meter (m) • Mass = kilogram (kg) • Time = second (s)

  14. Volume • SI unit of volume is the cubic meter (m3) • Or litre (L) • 1L = 1000cm3 (10cm x 10cm x 10cm) • 1L = 1000mL • 1mL = 1cm3 = 1cc • 1L of water has mass of 1kg • so 1mL of water has a mass of 1g

  15. Unit Analysis • The two sides of an equation must be equal in numerical value and also in units • ex. 2m x 4m = 8m2 • when solving problems always use the same system of units and the same unit for a given dimension • ex. 8 mi + 7km. One must be converted.

  16. Unit Conversion • to change units, conversion factors are used • equivalence expressed in ratios • ex. 1kg = 2.2lb • so

  17. Significant Digits • ex. 0.0000047s has two sig figs (think scientific notation, 4.7 x 106). The zeros are not significant. Get used to scientific notation if not familiar • ex. 74837.32m has 7 sig figs • ex. 74837.00m has 7 sig figs (think about when you measure something). The zeros after the decimal are significant.

  18. Significant Digits • in multiplying and dividing calculations, leave as many sig figs in the answer as there are in the quantity with the least sig figs • keep rounding in mind • ex. • ex. (523 x 106m)x(0.4650 x 102m) = 2.43 x 1010 m2

  19. Significant Digits • For addition and subtraction calculations, leave as many sig figs in the answer as the number with the least amount after the decimal • Ex. 24342.2 + 0.2345 = 24342.4 • Ex. 245 – 6.6 = 238

The Maserati accelerates at a constant 2.5m/s2 for half a minute. What is the Maserati’s velocity at half a minute? • vo = 0 (at rest) a = 2.5m/s2 t = 30s (converted from 0.5min) v1 = ?

The Maserati accelerates at a constant 2.5m/s2 for half a minute. What is the Maserati’s velocity at half a minute? • v1 = v0 + at • v1 = 0 + (2.5m/s2)(30s) • v1 = 75m/s

  26. Problem Solving • Step 6 Does the answer make sense • ex. A Maserati Quattroporte races a Bugatti Veyron starting at the stop light. The Maserati accelerates at a constant 3.5m/s2 for half a minute. What is the Maserati’s velocity at half a minute? • v1 = 75m/s • does the answer have the correct magnitude? • is the direction correct? • reasonable? v1 = 75m/s = 270km/h = 168mi/h
