  1. Social Studies Map Unit Dear Parent, Your child is beginning a unit on map skills. Class work and homework will comprise half of the unit grade, while a unit test will make up the other half. A study guide will be sent home approximately one week before the test. An online quiz will also be available through the third grade page on the Penn Forest website. The SOLs we will cover are: 3.4 The student will develop map skills by a) locating Greece, Rome and West Africa. b) describing the physical characteristics of Greece and Rome. 3.5 The student will develop map skills by a) positioning and labeling the seven continents and four oceans to create a world map. b) using the equator and prime meridian to identify the four hemispheres. e) locating specific places on a simple letter-number grid system. 3.6 The student will interpret geographic information from maps, tables, graphs and charts. SOLs covered in kindergarten through second grade will also be reviewed. There is a homework assignment with this unit. It is attached to this letter and is due Friday, October 13.
