  3. Telephone Systems • Los Angeles, CA office - standard PBX telephone with intercom • New Jersey office - standard PBX telephone with intercom • Missouri office - Avaya Digital Phone • Ohio offices - Avaya Digital Phone • California Plant - Nortel Digital Phonesystem with voice over IP (VoIP)

  4. Standard PBX Systems with Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) Advantages • Internal calls are only 3 or 4 digits; the prefix is shared • Internal intercom • Internal auditing • Lower line costs • Reliability

Standard PBX Systems with Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) Disadvantages • Can become full preventing data/voice transmission • Clarity can be less than desirable • Dial-up modem connections may require additional lines • Caller-id will not work as incoming calls are routed to groups rather than specific lines

  6. Voice over Internet Protocol(VoIP) Advantages • Highly scalable • Extremely flexible • Enhances production as voice data is treated as all other internet data • Zero cost for long distance calls

  7. Voice over Internet Protocol(VoIP) Disadvantages • Installation can be cost-prohibitive • Dependant upon constant electric power; an outage equals no communication • Security issues including electronic eavesdropping, virus’, and worms

  8. Recommendations\Benefits Recommend all offices upgrade to Voice over Internet Protocol networks • Lower usage costs • Enhance feature sets and communication capabilities • Create a uniform service network throughout the corporation

  10. Existing Network Protocol Adoption Rationale TCP/IP • Allows many systems to communicate easily as this is the protocol of the Internet IPX/SPX • Specifically designed to be a LAN protocol

TCP/IP Advantages • More error correction frames • Worldwide information-sharing • Data is delivered only to ports with the same TCP schema Disadvantages • Clients which are not Unix based may have compatibility issues with TCP/IP • Internet Security required as virus’, worms, and etcetera use the same protocol

  12. IPX/SPX Advantages • Very secure network when used with the internet • Very “hearty”; developed over 25 years ago • Extremely fast Disadvantages • Not beneficial for larger or enterprise networks • Hardware may be more expensive as the protocol is designed only for Netware

Bus Topology Advantages • Easy to add a computer or peripheral to the backbone of the network • Requires less cable length than the other topologies Disadvantages • Entire network shuts down if there is a break in the main backbone cable • Difficult to identify a problem if the entire network shuts down

Star Topology Advantages • Easy to install and wire the cabling • No disruptions to the network when connecting or removing devices • Easier to detect faults within the network than the other topologies Disadvantages • Requires more cable length than the bus topology • If the central hub or switch fails all of the attached devices are disabled from network communication

  19. Ring Topology Advantages • No loss in signal quality because each computer retransmits the signal • Easy to troubleshoot because it's easy to locate the fault areas Disadvantages • A failure in any cable or device breaks the loop and can take down the entire network

  20. Mesh Topology Advantages • The network can still operate even when a node breaks down or a connection goes bad Disadvantages • More difficult to configure and wire than the other topologies

  21. Recommendations Network Topologies California • Office computers should be upgraded to high speed Internet. • Office cabling should be upgraded to Category 5. • Stand alone computers in the plant’s sales department should be connected to the Ethernet.

  22. Recommendations Network Topologies Missouri • Cabling should be upgraded to Category 5 to increase maximum data transfer rate. • Ring topology should be upgraded to a mesh topology to provide better reliability.

Recommendations Network Topologies New Jersey • With 21 pc’s a bus topology is overloaded and should be replaced with a mesh topology. • Dial-up internet connection should be replaced with high speed internet. • Internet security should be installed. • Cabling should be upgraded to Category 5.

  25. Using Switches in the Network Advantages • Switches are capable of determining the destination of each packet of data and selectively forwards data to the computer that actually needs it.

  26. Recommendations Switches California • Replace the Bay Network hub in the California plant with a Cisco switch. Ohio and Missouri • Replace the Cisco 10 MB hub located in the Ohio and Missouri offices to a 100/1000 MB Cisco switch.

  27. Network Security Needs California and New Jersey • Need to implement a firewall and antivirus software • Move servers and PBX console to a secure room

Conclusion • Provided a review of the current Huffman Trucking Company’s telecommunications, networking and security systems including the advantages and disadvantages of each system. • Recommended several enhancements to the telecommunications and networking components of the Huffman Trucking Company to increase performance of the network and guarantee the health of the system.
