Real-Time Detection of Smoke and Exhaust: Optical Methods with Aethalometer™

Smoke and exhaust particles contribute to regional haze and air quality issues. Traditional chemical analyses for toxic components are cumbersome and costly. The Aethalometer™ offers a solution by utilizing optical absorption methods to measure black carbon and UV-absorbing materials in real time. This portable instrument can analyze various smoke sources, including diesel exhaust, wood smoke, and tobacco smoke. With quick, on-the-spot data, the Aethalometer™ serves as an effective alternative to standard chemical analyses for understanding air quality impacts on public health.

  1. Introduction to RMW Instruments Tom Henry RMW Company, Denver CO Tony Hansen Magee Scientific Company, Berkeley CA

  2. Smoke and Exhaust: Aesthetic Impacts • Smoke & exhaust particles absorb and reflect sunlight, contributing to haze • Regional haze and visibility management important issues in West

  3. Smoke and Exhaust: Listed Air Toxics • Toxic components • Specific compounds require specific chemical analyses • Analyses cumbersome & expensive • Accompanying components may permit more rapid detection by optical means • Black soot • UV-absorbing material

  4. Analytical Basis • Optically-absorbing material an indicator for diesel exhaust, wood- and tobacco smoke • “Black” carbon (‘BC’, ‘EC’) • “UV-absorbing material” (‘UVPM’) • Optical analysis is fast, sensitive, can be performed on-the-spot

  5. Analytical Method– Optical Absorption

  6. Optical vs. Chemical Analyses: Ambient Air “Six Cities Study”: Harvard School of Public Health

  7. Optical vs. Chemical Analyses: Tobacco Smoke Report published by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

  8. Analytical Instrument: Aethalometer™ • While continuously collecting sample, measures optical absorption in real time at 2 wavelengths (880 nm & 370 nm UV) • Converts optical absorption to mass concentration of BC and UVPM • Real-time data: 1 second / 1 minute / 1 hour

  9. Analytical Instrument : Aethalometer™ 19-inch rack mount
