  1. PUBLIC OPINION Definition: Public Opinion can be defined as the attitudes,beliefs,values which are seen to be commonly held and expressed by a majority of the citizens on a given political/public issue

  2. FEATURES • Are opinion shared by the majority of the people • Issues about the public are the central factors in public opinion • Communication and information are essential factors in the formation of public opinion • Public opinion is dynamic and changes with time

  3. It can also be seen as expression made by private individuals on public issues • They are expressions on specific issues of the state • FORMATION • Through the mass media • Disenchantment of policy:The dissatisfaction citizens expressed on certain government policy

  4. * It can be formed through individuals influence * Through pressure groups and political parties • Symposia and lectures • Other means of forming public opinion include: family,school,culture,ideology,socio-economic status

  5. MEASUREMENT OF PUBLIC OPINION • Response to government policies: Government notice of the response of the public towards certain of its policies through protest, either for or against . • Referendum/plebiscite • Opinion poll • Sampling • Through election

  6. IMPORTANCE • Check wrong use of power • Act as a feedback to government • For policy formulation • Determine legitimacy of government • A form of political participation

  7. MASS MEDIA • Definition: Mass-media are instrument of information dissemination, they are used to communicate to a large number of people e.gnewspaper,radioTv,internet • FUNCTIONS • Educate the masses • It helps in developing an informed society • Mobilising function

IMPACT OF MASS MEDIA ON NIGERIAN POLITICS • Independence struggle:It played a crucial role in the struggle for independence of this nation from colonial rule • Oppose unpopular policies of government • Fight corruption • Protection from excessive use of power • Monitor the day to day operation of government.*Also help in forming people opinion in the society
