Required Curriculum • Common Core • “CCSS” • = Common Core State Standards • Three-Minute Video Explaining the Common Core State Standards on Vimeo • Reading/Language Arts- Open Court and novel studies • Math- Houghton Mifflin: Go Math • Science- Holt • Social Studies-Holt • PE – SPARK and cooperative learning

Reading/Language Arts • Curriculum = Open Court (6th grade) and Novel Study • Study Guides: Story Study, Vocabulary Study, • Use of Literature Circles to enhance learning of stories • Themes: • 1) Perseverance • 3) Taking a Stand • 2) Ancient Civilizations • 4) Music • 5) Ecology and 6) Question of Values • Quizzed before the test on an online site: quizstar.4teachers.org • Tests are in written form

Math • Go Math(6th grade text) • Student write notes into their Math Journals • vocabulary, How-to-Solve Steps, Examples, Guided Practice and More Practice • Using multiple methods to solve math problems • Tests/Quizzes • On-line math practice • (Accelerated Math Program • to enhance their learning) • Daily Math Challenge Workbook • To keep up with the 6th grade Standards

Math Concepts • Number Sense: • Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide: positive and negative--whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; Use of percent • Statistics: • Mean, Median, Mode, Range; Probability • Algebra: • Solve 1-step and Multiple-Step Equations, Ratios/Proportions • Geometry: • Perimeter, Area and Volume • Math Reasoning: • Applications to Real-Life situations using the above concepts.

Science • Holt (6th grade Middle School) • Journal/Spiral for all Work and Projects • Note taking skills • Labs/Experiments, Tests/Quizzes • Concepts: • Semester 1 = Life Sciences • Food Chains, Biomes, MSOE • Semester 2 = Physical Sciences • Heat and Energy, Oceans • Semester 3 = Earth Sciences • Plate Tectonics, Volcanoes/Earthquakes

Homework and Assignments • Parents e-mailed the daily the HW assignments, projects, events, and announcements • HW = Daily • ~1.20 hours each night • Weekly Packet = “LP” to practice spelling, Vocab300, CST grammar, reading, and math review • Reading/Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science • Weekend HW might be necessary to finish unfinished work • Please contact me with any problems, we can talk 

Grading Policy • To show competency or achievement of standards • Letter grades (A, B, C, D, or F) • Number grades (5, 4, 3, 2, or 1) • A~5 high achieving, excellent • B, C~ 4 or 3 well done(B) or passing(C) • D~ 2 approaching grade level, almost passing • F~ 1 not passing, failing. • Grades are e-mailed • every 4-5 weeks. • I will communicate if the student is not achieving their goals or if they are missing work

  14. Schedule • Our day includes: • Computers ( 1-2 days/week) • PE (3 days/week: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Mile Thursday) • Reading (every day) • Writing/Spelling (every day) • Math (every day) • Social Studies (4-5 days/week) • Science ( 3-4 days/week)

  15. Student Field Trips and Academic/Behavioral Requirements • Please refer to contract received on the 1st day of school • Any Field Trip Form is due 2 days before we attend. • There are no phone calls home about missing forms

MSOE! • MSOE: • October 14-18 • please indicate whether your child is going or not going on the sign in paper in the back • Chaperones!!! • please indicate whether you like to chaperone on the sign-in paper in the back • We are limited to the number of chaperones needed. • Forms • will be coming home later • Medicine forms- need a doctor’s signature for a non-parent to administer a student’s medicine

  17. Parent Contributions • Chaperones • Volunteering in class • Copying • Helpers, as needed • Mask making • Decorating masks • Promotion in June • Etc.

  18. Fingerprinting • Volunteers must be fingerprinted through the District in order to volunteer for on or off campus activities. • Contact Tara Mendoza (office secretary) to see if you have cleared fingerprinting through the district

Goal Setting Students set goals for the year and semester-- • Grades • Principal’s (straight A’s all year). • All 3 semesters = Principal’s Lamp of Knowledge Medal at Promotion • Honor Roll(3.0-3.9). • All 3 semesters = Ribbon at Promotion • National Elementary Honor Society-(NEHS) • AR Goals by Semester • Student Leadership • Tutoring, Teacher Assisting in other classrooms, Library Assistants, Green Team, etc. • Levels of Achievement (hours recorded logs): Foulks Ranch and Superintendent’s, Governor’s: Bronze, Silver, Gold
