Innovative Tsunami Wave Loading Analysis Using High-Speed Video Camera

The Engineering Department's Geotechnical and Environmental Research Group conducted a study using a high-speed (1000 frames/s) video camera to capture a tsunami wave hitting and propagating past a model house. Miniature pressure sensors were attached to the building walls to measure the pressure exerted by the wave. The research revealed that the wave loading can destroy a typical house, prompting the development of a new design that can withstand such forces.
