  2. AGENDA • Applications in the Car • Traffic Message Channel • Emergency Alert System • Cell Phones with RDS receivers • Other Consumer Electronic products with RDS • Technical update • Audemat-Aztec range • Which model to propose • Competition

  3. APPLICATIONS in the CAR

  4. APPLICATIONS in the CAR • Display Call letters, radio text • Slogans, artist and song titles…scrolling PS (if authorized) • RDS automatic retuning • Program Type Search • Traffic Info (TA/TP) • TMC: Traffic Message Channel • Backup for HD Radio PSD

  5. CAR RECEIVERS

  6. CAR RECEIVERS with RDS • What about the availability of the car receivers with RDS? • In North America: • Difficult to purchase in a specialized shop a car receiver with RDS • Factory installed car receivers with RDS - GM, NISSAN, European cars • About 70% of the brand new cars • In Latin America: • Good penetration with new models (Renault, Peugeot-Citroen, GM, Volkswagen • Most of them only support the PS but not the RT

  7. TMC

  8. TRAFFIC MESSAGE CHANNEL • Dynamic application • Traffic Message Channel • TMC is another possibility to broadcast updated traffic information • This RDS application enables the diffusion of weather situations or traffic information in real time in the same time than the audio program. • TMC messages are decoded by a car radio or a navigation system. • Messages can be decoded into the language of the user.

  9. TRAFFIC MESSAGE CHANNEL 30 s

  10. TRAFFIC MESSAGE CHANNEL • In the USA: • NAVTEQ has implemented a TMC network with CBS stations • AUDIOVOX has implemented a TMC network with Clear Channel stations • GARMIN has now TMC receivers available • http://www.gpsnow.com/gmgtm10.htm • All of them are using the Audemat-Aztec FMB80 RDS encoder In the U.S.: The GTM 10 traffic receiver comes preloaded with a 15-month trial subscription to Clear Channel TMC. To continue the service, a one-year subscription is $60.00.

  12. EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEMS • Existing emergency communications systems failed during the terrorist attacks of 09-11-01 and during the catastrophic hurricanes that devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005. • These events also illustrated the failure of cell, web, and satellite based communications systems. These systems were significantly damaged or destroyed during the event. Katrina and Rita caused tri-state outages that lasted several weeks. None of these systems offers a viable platform for communications during, or immediately after a catastrophic event. • Global Security Systems GSSNet First Alert System uses the existing worldwide FM broadcast infrastructure to provide Target Area Coverage using a proprietary secure, encryptable, layered and survivable communications platform. This is achieved with full power and signal redundancy and without nodal vulnerability inherent in other communication systems.

  15. CELL PHONE

  16. CELL PHONE with RDS • Many cell phones are now equipped with an FM/RDS receiver • Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola,... • Basic application is display of artist name and song title • More advanced applications are Interactive Radio • Nokia announced RT+ “RT+ will allow the radio receiver to "understand" the broadcast Radiotext. Understanding means, the radio station can tell the receiver, - that Madonna is an "artist" Material Girl is the "title", but also - that 0800123456 is the "hotline phone number" and 08002132123 is the "sms number to purchase the song"

  17. OTHER DEVICES

  18. OTHERS DEVICE with RDS • iPod: Apple’s iPod has been a runaway market success. It is now possible to purchase an accessory for the iPod that will add a full FM band receiver. This receiver uses the display on the iPod Nano or Video. Aside from displaying FM frequency, it also shows the RDS information of the selected station.

  24. AUDEMAT-AZTEC RANGE

  25. COMMON FEATURES • Static and semi-dynamic data: • PS, PI, PTY, TA • Dynamic data: • Radio text and scrolling PS • Connection with automation software for artist name and songtitle display

  26. RDS GROUPS • SUPPORTED RDS GROUPS • The FMB80 supports all applications (dynamic data: ODA, TMC,...)

  27. COMMUNICATION • The FMB80 has serial ports + Ethernet port for TCP/IP • supports telnet, udp, tcp, http, snmp, smtp, ftp protocols • The RDS silver and FMB10 only 1 RS232 port

  28. ARTIST NAME and SONG TITLE • All 3 models: • supports scrolling PS by word or by characters • with automatic centering features • Only the FMB10 and FMB80: • Have repetition capabilities • Command translator • Labeling capability • Only the FMB80: • Has a scheduler, e-mails, TCP/IP, BASIC interpreter, etc.

  32. WHICH MODEL • DO YOU PROPOSE?

  33. WHICH MODEL? • What application? • 90% of the time is Artist name and song title • Do you want to do labeling? • How do you output the info from your automation software? • Via TCP/IP or serial connection • Can you define the commands being sent by the automation software • Where do you plan to install the encoder?

  34. COMPETITION

  35. COMPETITION

  36. COMPETITION • No dynamic messaging with the 702 • No labeling, command translator, repetition capabilities with the the 712 and 713 • The RDS SILVER does the same as the 712 and 713. • The FMB10 exceeds the 712 and 713 in term of capabilities

  37. COMPETITION BE RDi 20 Not fully compliant with RDS standard Not fully compliant with TCP protocols Requires a TRE message manager Around $2,500
