Aim of the workshop: • To develop your understanding of how your child is taught written calculations in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. • To demonstrate and give you opportunities to attempt maths activities using the same methods your child has learnt
Teaching Maths at BSB • Primary Framework for Mathematics (Heinemann) • Emphasis is on the using and applying mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding through problem solving & investigative activities • Mental Maths: Strategies for learning number bonds and times tables facts are taught throughout.
Teaching Maths at BSB • Written methods of calculation are introduced later • Maths vocabulary • Computers and calculators are used to enhance children’s learning. • Action rhymes, songs and games are used to engage the children
Do it your way! • What is 10 add 8? • 20 take away 11 • 5 times 2 • 15 lots of 2 • 25 divided by 5
Did you do this in your head? • Did you do this in your head using drawings or jottings? • Do you use a pencil and paper procedure? • Do you need a calculator?
Now try it this way: • Use a number line • Partition • Round and adjust • Repeated addition • Grid method • Repeated subtraction
Remember • Learning a new method of calculating does not mean other ways are no longer relevant • Children should always be looking for calculations they can do wholly or partly mentally
BSB’s focus • An approach based on the skills of mental calculation: • Remembering number facts • Using known facts to derive new ones • Familiarity with the number system and relationships between numbers • Having a repertoire of mental and written strategies • Understanding of the four operations and how they are related
Moving from informal to formal methods • At every stage, teachers first use examples that children can easily do mentally • Children then see how the steps in a written procedure link to what they do in their heads • They then move to using numbers that cannot easily be dealt with mentally, including money and decimal numbers • Partitioning and place value are crucial concepts and estimation of size of answers is essential.

Remember: If your child finds things difficult, take a break, continue to be positive and praise them for what they can do and keep on practising with them. Keep it fun!
