  1. What are some things that come in boxes? What are some things that could fit in these boxes? Many times we don’t often think about the box itself, but rather what is inside the box. Often times we throw away the box after we receive a gift. Today we will create special collaged boxes and be thinking about what will fit inside of them that is special to us.

  2. First Project! Questions? What is collage? What is texture? What does it mean to layer something?

  3. Collage--- A work of art that is created by different bits of materials, materials such as newspaper, paint, beads, scrapbook paper, and various other materials pasted together to create a work of art. Texture-the characteristic of the surface of a work of art that comes from the way materials are used. Examples: rough, smooth, soft, or bumpy.Layering-putting materials one on top of the other. Today we will be using this technique in our collages.

  4. Example of Collage Artist: Jonathan Burstein Sometimes collage materials are used to create a bigger picture, like this one used to create a nose and mouth.

  5. Artist: Rayna Gillman By using different types of materials, this collage shows a lot of TEXTURE. Some parts look smooth and others look rough.

  6. Artist: Jonathan Burstein Notice how this artist used SMALLER pieces of material and LAYERED them to create a larger work of art. Can you see the eye here that he created?

  7. Sometimes the little tiny scraps that we most often throw away after we are done making a project will make great materials to use for our collages!

  8. Today we will be using things like newspaper, markers, scrapbook paper, beads, and buttons to create our works of art. We will be using DIFFERENT SHAPES AND SIZES of these materials for our box collages.

  9. Remember to be thinking about what may fit in your box and be thinking about what you’d like to put in them that is special to you! What we don’t finish today we will work on in the next class!
