  1. Observations Along the Newly Inaugurated Asela_Goba Road • The time of visit is during the driest month of the year (Mid March). In other months getting strong contrasts in moisture availability is difficult. • The impact observed along gravel roads constructed by regional Road Authorities and the asphalt roads is quite different • The gravel roads have narrow width, smaller height, and are not well packed. As a result moisture content difference along such roads are barely seen (see pics..). • The enter-regional asphalted roads that are crisscrossing the country, as a result of the physiographic setup of the country, run across flow direction in most of their lengths. These roads have well compacted thick (from 2 to 5 meter) impervious base and asphalted top. Both vertical and horizontal flows are blocked by such roads, except where there are drainage crossings. The difference in water tables on either sides of such roads is inevitable.

  2. Observations Along the Newly Inaugurated Asela_Goba Road • The impact they are creating has both positive and negative nature • In places where there is arable or pasture land on the moisture available side farmers are benefiting from the retention created as a result of the coming of the road. But there are cased where such retentions happen in unusable part of the road- while the arable land down stream is blocked by the road. • Areas that are benefiting the available moisture in such dry months might face the risk of inundation and flooding. • Aggravated erosion and gulley formations are new occurrences seen along this road • Such roads have a total length of nearly 50000 kilometers before the GTP plan and a total of 15700 km is planned to be constructed during the GTP period. • The National ERA standard include stringent hydrological analysis but only for the road safety purpose. It doesn’t consider water availability issues and social impact resulted from this impact.
