  2. DIEESE definition of the informal sector and the informal economy • Informal sector - 15th ICLS – International Conference of Labour Statisticians – ILO. • Defined in terms of characteristics of the production units (enterprises) in which the activities take place (enterprise approach)

DIEESE definition of the informal sector and the informal economy • Informal sector - 15th ICLS • Enterprise: • -any unit engaged in the production of goods or services for sale or barter. • -production units which employ hired labour, production units that are owned and operated by single individuals working on own account as self-employment persons, either alone or with the help of unpaid family members. • -Examples: self-employed street vendors, taxi drivers, home-based workers are all considered enterprises.

DIEESE definition of the informal sector and the informal economy Informal sector - 15th ICLS • Independent workers • ·Production units which employ hired labour • ·Production units that are owned and operated by single individuals working on own account as self employed persons, either alone or with the help of unpaid family members.

DIEESE definition of the informal sector and the informal economy • In Dieese statistics we consider the informal sector according to the definition established in the 15th ICLS. • Independent workers • Own account • Small Employers (Note: Enterprises with up to 5 employees and with a monthly income equal or below average) • Self employed academic professionals
