  5. Key Study Inbau et al • Developed approach to interrogation based on the idea of presenting criminals with a mass of damaging facts • Therefore they would have no choice but to confess

Key Theory: Inbau’s 9 steps • Direct confrontation • Chance to shift blame • Never allow suspect to deny guilt • Ignore excuses • Reinforce sincerity, eye contact, first names • If suspect cries, infer guilt • Pose the “alternative question” • Admit guilt in front of witness • Document admission

Points to consider… Read the study ~ make summary notes ~ consider evaluation points ~ some guidance… • Can these techniques be justified? • Are there any types of offenders who might be particularly vulnerable? • Could they lead to false confessions? • Can you apply the situational / dispositional explanation to this theory to explain why it is an effective technique? • Why might someone be advised to remain silent throughout this process?
