  2. Raphael was born on the 6 April or 28 March 1483 in the small Central Italian city of Urbino in the Marche region. He wasa painter and  architесt of the High Renaissance.

  3. Early life and work. • His mother Màgia died in 1491 when Raphael was eight and his father Giovanni Santi in 1494. The father was a painter and poet, so the first experience of the artist Rafael received in his father's workshop. • His first documented work was the Baronci altarpiece for the church of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino

  4. In the following years he painted works for other churches, including the "Mond Crucifixion" (about 1503) and the BreraWedding of the Virgin (1504), the Oddi Altarpiece.  • He also visited Florence in 1504 and he began to paint Madonnas and portraits.

  6. Influence of Florence. • Here, he met Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Bartolomeo della Porta and many other Florentine artisans. Carefully studied the technique of painting by Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo.

  7. Saint Catherine of Alexandria, 1507, borrows from the pose of Leonardo'sLeda Deposition of Christ, 1507, drawing from Roman sarcophagi.

  8. In Florence Raphael created about 20 Madonnas. Although the subjects are standard: Madonna or holding a Baby in her arms, or he plays alongside with John the Baptist, all of the Madonna are individual and they are particularly maternal charm. • F.e. The Ansidei Madonna, ca. 1505, The Madonna of the Meadow, ca.1506,  Granduca Madonna, Madonna of the Pinks, Madonna and child with Saint John the Baptist.

  9. Roman period. • By the end of 1508, he had moved to Rome, where he lived for the rest of his life.  He was invited by the new Pope Julius II. This first of the famous "Stanze" or "Raphael Rooms" to be painted, now always known as the Stanza della Segnatura after its use in Vasari's time, was to make a stunning impact on Roman art, and remains generally regarded as his greatest masterpiece, containing The School of Athens, The Parnassus and the Disputa.

  11. Architecture • After Bramante's death in 1514, Raphael was named architect of the new St. Peter's. He designed many buildings, and for a short time was the most important architect in Rome, working for a small circle around the Papacy.

The inscription in his marble sarcophagus, an elegiac distich written by Pietro Bembo, reads: "Here lies that famous Raphael by whom Nature feared to be conquered while he lived, and when he was dying, feared herself to die.“ • "Здесь покоится великий Рафаэль, при жизни которого природа боялась быть побежденной, а после его смерти она боялась умереть".
