  3. Let’s Break it Down • KISS-Keep It Simple Silly • 1st paragraph  Introduction-state your opinion • 2nd, 3rd, 4th paragraphs  Support your claim (reasons) • 5th paragraph  Conclusion/Call to action

  4. Introduction (1st paragraph) • Start with a hook…something interesting to grab the readers attention • Statistic • Question • Anecdote (story or example) • Introduce the topic- rewrite the prompt or create a way of tying it in-let the reader know what you are writing about! • Then, tell the reader what you think—your opinion-- and give your reasons (try to have 3!) This is considered the thesis. • Pick one side and stick to it

  5. Topic • According to the US Department of Health, childhood obesity is on the rise. Many people blame the fact that schools have eliminated PE classes past elementary school. • In Tennessee, laws are being passed to make PE mandatory all 4 years of high school. Do you agree or disagree with these laws?

  6. Example Intros..Statistic According to recent statistics from the US Department of Health, childhood obesity has increased 30% over the last 3 years. Many people believe that the increase is due to children no longer having to take PE classes in school. The state of Tennessee is passing laws which will require students to take PE all four years of high school. These laws should be passed because PE classes will help teach children important healthy lifestyle habits, give children the chance to be active during the day, and will help teach personal responsibility and team work.

  8. More about the body • Transition word or phrase + your reason= 1st sentence (main idea sentence) • Follow up with examples to support your reason (2-3 sentences) • **Remember- you can make up quotes and statistics!!! • One closing sentence per paragraph-try not to leave the reader hanging

  9. Example body paragraph: To begin, mandatory PE classes would help teach children healthy lifestyle habits. Once out of elementary school, most students do not have the opportunity to be exposed to healthy habits such as exercise routines or the elements of a healthy diet. Although many students play sports, for some students this is not an option. PE classes would provide the opportunity for students to learn these important lessons regardless of the students’ interest or ability to play sports.

Conclusion • This is where you tie everything together! • 1st-restate your opinion-try to use new words • Then you can revisit your 3 reasons or sum them up • You can also mention the opposition: ex: While some believe that the PE classes would cost too much money, the benefits of the classes far outweigh the costs. • Finish with a bang! Strong, thought provoking sentence, or perhaps a call to action

  11. Keys to Success! • Vocabulary- • Review your paragraphs--Can you add adjectives (describing words) and interesting adverbs (describing action words)?
