  1. Things to know about mid-century modern style furniture Bauhaus architects and designers who immigrated to the United States due to economic changes in Germany after World War II founded the mid-century modern Danish design movement. It is identified by its simple looks and functionality. As in any era, don't feel compelled to recreate that era, from architecture to furnishings to landscaping. You can do it if you feel compelled to do so, but many homeowners who are just starting are intimidated by tackling a style they love. Authentic parts can also be very expensive to source, although many are still in production or have been revived due to demand. Color and Materials: New construction methods and new materials such as plastic had a great impact on later Midcentury Modern designers. Plastic was used for its qualities rather than to mimic wooden furniture. Traditional materials such as wood and non-traditional materials such as metal, glass, vinyl, plywood, plexiglass, and Lucite have been used generously in bold, as well as the graphic use of black and white. Most mid-century furniture had gone out of style by the late 1960s, but interest in that period began to return in the early to mid-1980s. Within a decade, old designs from the mid-1960s century became increasingly popular. Staehr Nielsen is a ceramic artist who contributed a lot to the growth the mid-century furniture.

  2. Bottom line: Iconic pieces from that era have been endlessly adapted and copied, and you're likely to find pieces to suit your lifestyle needs and budget, even if you don't want to spend a fortune on furniture. Buying antique furniture is one way to do it, and in general, even if you decide to buy new, a large piece can set the tone. Build around it. It doesn't have to be an ensemble but avoid too many patterns and stick to one color palette, especially with wood. Danish designers like Kasper Salto, Knud Færch have contributed a lot to the beauty of mid-century furniture.
