Assessment • The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) has authorized a teacher survey that will be conducted from mid-November through early December that addresses the implementation of the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) in Mathematics. The survey will provide information about the opportunity of students to learn concepts associated with the mathematics standards that will be assessed on the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT) beginning in March 2011. • Approximately forty percent of Georgia’s public high schools have been randomly selected to participate in the survey. The survey will ask teachers about recent instructional activities as well as certain background information. Responses will remain anonymous. A third party will gather and analyze the survey results and provide a report to GaDOE. • We wish to thank the many teachers who attended (after having been nominated by their systems) our EOCT and GHSGT Content Reviews that were conducted during the month of October. We extend thanks as well to those who were nominated and selected to participate in Georgia Alternate Assessment (GAA) Focus Groups the week of October 25, 2010. Update on STEM Education in GeorgiaContact: Gilda Lyon, glyon@doe.k12.ga.us, STEM Program SpecialistScience, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) is gaining momentum as Georgia continues to prepare students for opportunities in careers that are STEM related. National STEM disciplines include:Agricultural sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Environmental Science, Geosciences, Life/ Biological Sciences (to include biotechnology), Mathematics, and Physics/AstronomySTEM disciplines are those areas that result in careers in high demand, highly skilled, high wage jobs. By the time this year’s high school juniors graduate from college, America will need over 400,000 workers in STEM fields.Georgia STEM Initiatives:Georgia is doing its part to help with the national goal of preparing students to work in STEM careers by establishing 26 model STEM schools across the state. These schools are working to prepare students for the 21st century workplace, where traditional CTAE, math and science students are transformed into 21st century thinkers and workers. One middle school and one high school from each congressional district were awarded a Title II D ARRA Technology grant to begin preparing students for careers in the STEM disciplines. What is considered a Georgia STEM model school? The focus of STEM schools is to use technology-rich, integrated project-based learning that challenges students to refine their thinking skills. Transformational instruction, highly motivating activities, and real-world experiences relating to local industries are key components to preparing Georgia students for the STEM-rich environment of their future. School Counselors • On October 26th, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) issued a fact sheet regarding a school’s responsibility in cases of harassment or bullying. • The statutes that OCR enforces include Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin; Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973; and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Library Media Services • GaDOE has created a suggested list of bullying websites and print material for grades K-12. • Send an email to Judy Serritella at jserrite@doe.k12.ga.us if you would like a copy. • All but two systems completed the Library Media Feedback Form and the information is being analyzed and put into a document for distribution. • In mid-November Library Media Coordinators will be invited to webinar sessions that will focus on their needs, concerns, and questions. Literacy Updates • State Literacy Plan • The GaDOE has applied for and received a Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy State Formula (SRCL) grant to assist us in completing and publishing the State of Georgia Literacy Plan. These funds will be able to offset the cost of travel, professional learning, publicity and implementation training for the plan. We will begin working and revising the current draft plan in order to incorporate the Common Core Curriculum, the Race to the Top implementation, and the Birth to age 3 component.   43. Science and AYP (current status) The United States Department of Education sent a letter in February 08 that addressed state requirements with respect to science assessments. They are: • The state must have content standards in science. • The state must administer a general and alternate science assessment in each grade span 3-5, 6-9, and 10-12. • The state must include all students in its general or alternate science assessments. • The state must report the results of general and alternate science assessments on state, district, and school report cards.

  44. Science and AYP Science will be the second AYP indicator for all elementary and middle schools starting in 2012.

University of Wisconsin Environmental Science Survey The University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point GEM (Global Environmental Management) Center is conducting a national survey on environmental science curriculum that incorporates indigenous (Native American) knowledge in the K-12 schools. We are looking for the best examples of such curriculum to highlight at a conference to be held in May, 2011. Since much curriculum is developed at the school district level, we are seeking your help in identifying examples for us. If you click on the survey link below, it will take you to the online survey.   46.
