How long does a Tornado last? • Tornadoes usually last just a few minutes, but some short and small tornadoes will only last a couple of seconds. • The longest tornado in known in history was the Tri-State Tornado, lasting 3 hrs. and 29 minutes. http://www.enchantedlearning.com/weather/storms/tornadoes.html

The Fujita Scale • The Fujita scale is used to measure the speed, size, and damage of a tornado. • F1: 78-112 mph, usually breaks tree branches and rips off roof shingles. • F2:Trees torn from ground, roof being removed from house frames • F3:Trains overturned, cars picked up from road • F4:Houses destroyed, cars thrown 100s of meters. • F5:Trees debarked, steel torn, concrete cracked www.tornadofacts.com/tornado/scale/2011

Tornado Facts Small tornadoes sometime branch off of large tornadoes In Oklahoma, a small herd of cattle were sucked up by a tornado and carried across the countryside, before being set down unharmed. In 1981, a tornado that swept through the Italian City of Ancona lifted a sleeping baby from its baby carriage and set it down unharmed on the ground.

  9. The Tri-State Tornado • The Tri State is the largest tornado in U.S. History. This tornado holds many records. They Include: • Killing the most people: 747 bodies found • The longest lasting: it lasted 3 hours and 29 minutes • The fastest traveling speed: 73 mph • It traveled through 8 states: affected: Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Kansas, possibly other states
