The Academic Literacy course for grade 7 students aims to enhance their proficiency in understanding and responding to informational texts. By the end of the course, students will become critical consumers of information and effectively write in response to various texts. Grading is structured with assessments (30%), daily performance tasks (60%), and preparation for class (10%), emphasizing comprehension, vocabulary, and classroom participation. Units cover metacognitive strategies, text structures, assessment strategies, genres of informational text, study strategies, and vocabulary development, all designed to enrich students’ literacy skills.

Academic Literacy 2014-2015
The Academic Literacy course is designed to extend the informational reading proficiency of grade 7 students. By the end of this course, students will have achieved two overarching goals: • 1. Be critical consumers of informational texts • 2. Write in response to informational texts
Grading Protocol 2014-2015
Weighted 30%: Assessments • Tests • Quizzes • Projects
Weighted 60%: Daily Performance Tasks • Work that is done in the classroom on a daily basis categorized by the following: • Comprehension and demonstration of student understanding of concept • Distributive Practice • Extending/Refining • Writing Assignments
Daily Performance Tasks • Formative Assessments • Vocabulary Enrichment • Notebook Check
Weighted 10%: Preparation for Class • Homework (not to be more than 5%) • Class Participation • Class Preparedness • Teachers may use discretion to separate Class Participation & Homework within this category
Preparation for Class • Late work policy should be consistent with the policy below. If homework/classwork is gone over in class, late work does not have to be accepted unless the student was absent. • No Extra Credit can be earned with classwork.
Preparedness for Class • No Extra Credit can be earned with classwork. Teachers should not drop the lowest grade from the gradebook. • No extra credit may be given • Absentee late work will follow district guidelines.
Late work • The earned percentage grade will be reduced by 10% for one day late. • The earned percentage grade will be reduced by 20% for two days late. • The earned percentage grade will be reduced by 30% for three days late. • After the third late day the grade results in a zero.
Beginning of Class Expectations - Always enter quietly - Read the “Do Now” posted on the board -Prepare for class (clear your desk of binders, have your writing instrument, SSR book and your class notebook on your desk top)
