  4. Overview -To inform students of the most important musicians and festivals of the 1960’s counterculture. -This module will include and emphasize the importance of certain places/festivals and musicians during this time period.

  5. Goals -Student must be able to identify popular artists and their songs. -After watching a short video about pop festivals students must be able to identify and distinguish between the 3 festivals.

  6. Target Audience -This module is going to be geared towards grades 9-12, in an American history class, while discussing the 1960’s time period.

  7. Learning Environment -This module can be used at home, in a computer lab, or in a classroom with compute accessibility. -This module is to be completed on an individual basis, with pairs being acceptable if need be.

  8. Learning Objectives Students will be learning about: -Pop festivals -Popular and influential musicians

  9. Orientation -Students will use this module when discussing the 1960’s time period. -The slides will introduce well known musicians and festivals.

  10. Motivation -The students will be introduced to Smiley Sam, who will give them positive reinforcement and helpful hints when needed. -He will say things such as “Try again!”, “That is incorrect, go back and try again”, “Correct, good job!”, and “Keep up the good work!”. -If students miss a question on the quiz, he will supply them with a small hint to help them in the right direction.

  11. Information -This module will inform students of important musicians and festivals of the 1960’s.

  12. Application -Students will read slides, watch a video, and then take a short quiz.

  13. Evaluation -Students will take a 10 question quiz about presented information, which they must pass with 90% accuracy.

  19. Jimi Hendrix James Marshal “Jimi” Hendrix November 27, 1942- September 18. 1970

  20. Served in the United States Army for 1 year. • Started playing guitar, and became very popular for his use of a wah-wah pedal on his guitar. • Headlined at the iconic Woodstock and also played at the Monterey Pop Festival. • Named #1 guitarist on the list of 100 Best Guitarist of All Time.

  21. The Grateful Dead Jerry Garcia: Lead Vocals, Guitar Bob Weir: Lead Guitar Ron “Pigpen” McKernan: Keyboard, Harmonica Phil Lesh: Bass Guitar Bill Kreutzmann: Drums

Formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1965. • Popular for their elements of rock, folk, reggae, blues, and jazz. • Named #57 on the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time by Rolling Stones Magazine. • Lived in Haight-Ashbury, the meca of Hippie Culture during the late 1960’s. • Performed at Woodstock and Monterey Pop Festivals.

  23. Janis Joplin Janis Lyn Joplin January 19, 1943- October 4, 1970

Was originally a member of the Big Brother and the Holding Company before going solo. • Most popular for her gravely voice in songs such as “Me and Bobby McGee”. • After her short singing career of only four years she is crowned the Queen of Rock and Roll. • Janis Joplin is ranked #46 on the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, released by Rolling Stones Magazine. • Performed at both Woodstock and Monterey Pop Festivals.

Formed in 1967, by brothers Tom and John in Berkeley, CA. • Despite their West Coast origin, the band is associated with Southern Rock. • CCR is most popular for writing and performing songs that go against mainstream society. • In the Rolling Stones Magazine 100 Greatest Artists of All Time they rank #80.
