Engineering Education Innovation Center (EEIC) • College of Engineering • Engineering • can be defined as “the use of science and mathematics to invent, create, design, develop, or improve technologies.” • Humanitarian • has been defined as “concerned with or seeking to promote human welfare” (Apple dictionary), which is quite a bit broader than typical interpretations of this word (e.g., it does not just apply to disasters or international work, but local/domestic work). • Humanitarian Engineering is therefore the design and development of technology to help people.

Engineering Education Innovation Center (EEIC) • College of Engineering Appropriate Technology • After World War II, it was realized that industrial technologies were not often compatible with local capacities in developing countries. • As local conditions vary such as geography and culture, so does the definition of a technology’s “appropriateness” varies. • As populations grow, in order to help reducing poverty it requires innovating (or re-discovering) more effective, sustainable, appropriate technologies and processes.

Engineering Education Innovation Center (EEIC) • College of Engineering • Evaluating a product • In order to evaluate a product, a criteria needs to be determined. • The criteria for appropriate technology is in a Excel spreadsheet that can be downloaded from the EEIC website. • - Your first task is to rank the criteria on level of importance with your team. • Check to see whether or not, the product meets the criteria. • If it meets the criteria →“ + “ →2pts • If it doesn’t meet the criteria→ “ - “ → -2pts • If it is in between (neutral)→“ 0 “ →1 pt. • Afterwards, add them up and determine which product is the one your company would recommend for investment.
