  5. Three Main Parts Preamble = Opening statement Articles = Provides framework for our government; main document Amendments = Legal changes to the main document

  6. Six Goals of the Preamble Secure Liberties Form unified nation Establish Justice Six Goals Ensure peace and order of home Promote government well being of all citizens Protect citizens against foreign attack

  7. Preamble Form a perfect union= a unified nation Establish justice = settle disputes Ensure Domestic Tranquility = peace and order at home Common Defense = protect against foreign attack General Welfare = well being of citizens Blessing of Liberty = freedom

  8. Seven Principles Republicanism Federalism Limited Government Separation of Powers Constitution Seven Principles Checks and Balances Individual Rights Popular Sovereignty

  9. Seven Principles Popular Sovereignty = gets authority from the people Limited Government = powers driven from Constitution; everyone must obey laws Separation of Powers = Balance government, three branches Checks and Balances = Safeguards against abuse of powers
