  1. QUESTIONS FOR GOD WHY DO BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE?

  2. THEME VERSE: Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of Heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, the weeds also appeared. “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?” ‘An enemy has done this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ “ ‘ No,’ He answered, ‘Because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn,’” Matthew 13:24-30

  3. Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People SAME FATE “Good” and “Bad” we all have the ______________ So I reflected on all this and concluded that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God’s hands, but no man knows whether love or hate awaits him. All share a common destiny- the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad, the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not. As it is with the good man, so it is with the sinner; as it is with those who take oaths, so with those who are afraid to take them. This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes them all. The hearts of men, more over, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and afterward they join the dead. Anyone who is among the living has hope- even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!

  4. Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People SAME FATE “Good” and “Bad” we all have the ______________ For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten. Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished; never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun. Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink you wine with a joyful heart, for it is now that God favors what you do. Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil. Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun.

  5. Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People SAME FATE “Good” and “Bad” we all have the ______________ For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. what ever you hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom. I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. More over, no man knows when his hour will come: As fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare, so men are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them. Ecclesiastes 9:1-12

  6. Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People GOOD PEOPLE We assume there are ___________________ All have turned aside, they have together become corrupt; there is now one who does good, not even one. Psalm 14:3 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their ways are vile; there is no one who does good. God looks down from heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. Everyone has turned away, they have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. Psalm 53:1-3

  7. Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People GOOD PEOPLE We assume there are ___________________ What shall we conclude then? Are we any better? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. As it is written: “there is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good not even one.” “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The poison of vipers on their lips.” “Their mouths are full of bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood: ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Romans 3:9-18

  8. Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People GOD’S GRACE All people live on ________________ That you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. Matthew 5:45

  9. Why Do Good Things Happen To Bad People? DO HAPPEN The truth is good things _______________ to bad people You are always righteous, O Lord, when I bring a case before you. Yet I would speak with you about your justice: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do the all the faithless live at ease? You have planted them, and they have taken root: they grow and bear fruit. You are always on their lips but far from their hearts. Jeremiah 12:1-2

  10. Why Do Good Things Happen To Bad People? INJUSTICE Sometimes there is ____________ There is something else meaningless that occurs on the earth: righteous men who get what the wicked deserve, and wicked men who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless. Ecclesiastes 8:14

  11. What God Promises! ALWAYS WATCHES OUT God __________________________ for those who live righteously I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. Psalm 37:25 The days of the blameless are known to the Lord, and their inheritance will endure forever. In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty. Psalm 37:18-19 Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall. But you, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of corruption; blood thirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you. Psalm 55:22-23 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

  12. What God Promises! HIS GLORY God uses bad things in life for _____________ As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. As long as it is day, we must do the work him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” John 9:1-5

  13. What God Promises! GET WHAT THEY DESERVE People will always _____________________________ The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the house of the righteous. He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble. The wise will inherit honor, but the fool he holds up to shame. Proverbs 3:33-35 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from that Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:7-10

  14. What God Promises! WORTH IT! Living righteously is hard but, ______________ Let those who love the Lord hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. Light is shed upon the righteous and joy on the upright in heart. Rejoice in the Lord, you who are righteous, and praise his holy name. Proverbs 97:10-12 Do you not know that in a race all the runner run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the game goes into strict training. They do it to win a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

  15. What God Promises! LIVE RIGHTEOUSLY God will give us the strength to ______________________ We are pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed but not in despair; persecuted but not abandoned; struck down but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 2 Corinthians 4:7-10 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us and eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
